CSGO struck a deal with Turner like a month ago if I remember correctly.
This isn't surprising.
Networks know how big esports are and continue to get.
There's a reason ESPN, Turner, Mark Cuban, Rick Fox, and other major businessmen are investing in esports organizations.

Media giant Turner Broadcasting is planning anesports league featuring Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Launched in partnership with talent agency WME | IMG, the league will bring in the top Counter-Strike teams from across the globe to participate in two 10-week seasons annually. And CS GO is much easier to pickup. 2 teams of 5. One of the teams has to plant the bomb at one of the 2 bomb sites or eliminate the other team. The other team has to defend the sites/ eliminate the other team.
CSGO relies heavily on strategy as well.
I'm sure LOL is similar but I have no clue what is going on in that game. I really don't even know the objective. It doesn't really appeal to me. CSGO is at least interesting but I'm not going to go out of my way to watch these on ESPN.

LoL goal = destroy the enemy core. I get the complexity of the draft being lost on people. The objective overall is really simple though.

Ugh I get no pleasure at all watching video games when I want to watch sports.

Well the good news is that this will primarily soak up time otherwise filled by Jemele Hill. It seems like a good trade to me.

I kind of don't get it. I watch some gaming videos on YouTube when I take a dumpcake, but I'm not tuning in to live broadcasts to watch some dude play a video game.

Nor are people tuning in to watch Jemele Hill talk about [anything]. ESPN is in bad shape right now and the only thing that has really been working for them is live broadcasts. There is only so much Football/Basketball/Baseball to go around. You've gotta find that content somewhere.

I used to love watching paintball on ESPN as a kid.
Posted on 5/23/16 at 3:45 pm to StrongBackWeakMind
I watched the shite out of Battlebots on there too. ESPN has showed some weird arse shite over the years.
Posted on 5/23/16 at 3:56 pm to StrongBackWeakMind
$500 million dollars for fvcking video games, and I can barely find rugby or aussie rules football on TV.
Ugh, fvcking nerds.

Didn't they try this same shite with Madden a few years ago and it failed?
Posted on 5/23/16 at 4:03 pm to CaptainBrannigan
Madden has NEVER had a competitive following like LoL.
They sell out every arena they hold a tournament at now. The game is popular in the U.S., Europe, China, and Korea. There is a growing scene in Turkey, Eastern Europe, and South America.
Madden has no following outside of the U.S. ESPN may not get exclusive live internet broadcast, but maybe exclusive view on demand rights. This is what ESPN3 has been leading up to.

E-Sports, even more LOL
And yes, i have unfortunately watched a few of these tourneys, to see what the game was about, and it's nerds, nerds who idolize these nerds, and nerdy chicks who think these nerds are dreamy.

Being a nerd isn't really an insult anymore.
Need to try something else.

ESPN is doing the right thing in changing to find a new demo. People who never watch the station will now and generate some revenue.
Bingo.
And for those of you who don't know, League of Legends is the most popular online PC game in the world right now.
Currently in it's 6th season, it started off pretty small and has made over $1 billion, across all continents.
Team based 5v5 game. It's a lot of fun and INCREDIBLY lucrative for the professional players (especially the Korean players).
If you're not much of a video gamer, I can understand why this would seem stupid. But having played video games my entire life and watching "profession e-sports", it's pretty exciting during the international tournaments.
Also, shout out to my mom and dad who told me I couldn't play video games for a living.
Posted on 5/23/16 at 4:13 pm to dcrews
Slight correction. The game made 1.6 billion in 2015 alone. This game is YUGE.
