Tweet here. The actual website with the story has crashed (presumably due to traffic) so I can't post any more details.
Prepare for e-sports showing up on TV more and more over the coming years.

Thank sweet baby jesus for the MLB Network.

What's the league of legends?

I was gonna start a thread on here a few weeks ago about how I nearly spit out my drink when I came across a Sirius XM show about e-sports. I figured the thread would just get shipped to the gaming board, and that stuff is probably old news there.

It was bound to happen.
There are, right now on a Monday at 1:00 in the afternoon and various times across the world, 425k people watching 4 games being played on just twitch:
Counter Strike: Global Offensive (~125k)
League of Legends (~125k)
Hearthstone (~90k)
DOTA 2 (~85k)
These numbers go much higher when a game has big tournaments going on. I have seen 500k people just watching CS: GO
Big money to be made and ESPN is moving into nontraditional stuff that has big audiences. WWE AND E"sports"

Probably the most popular video game in the world. The professional scene has a very large global following. ESPN has actually broadcast Heroes of the Storm (a much smaller esport) before, but this would be the first long term deal of its type.
The ESPN Facebook comments will be golden.

ESPN: "We are rapidly losing subscribers, and we already pay exorbitant sums for league broadcast rights with very little postseason coverage outside of the NBA. What should be our next move? Got it, let's pay $500 million for video game tournaments."

I look forward to Jemel Hill's commentary that there's not enough African Americans playing League of Legends.

I thought this was going to be about a senior baseball league like the Senior Tour

ESPN is doing the right thing in changing to find a new demo. People who never watch the station will now and generate some revenue.

Followed by multiple talk shows that will debate the issue.

Gamers today are soft. Some of you young bucks don't remember Goldeneye in the 90s. Now that was real gaming, it actually took heart and drive

TBS fricked up the market by making that CS:GO show

At this point, people tune into ESPN for live events. ESPN is leaning hard into broadcasting more live events. That's why the MLB gets such a huge contract despite the existential crisis around baseball's future; MLB brings a disgusting amount of live events to ESPN.
LoL is filling quite a few hours for ESPN during the football offseason.

As someone who plays video games and loves sports, please keep them separate. Video games are not fricking sports

Crouching as OddJob was a great way to make everyone hate you.
