It'd be dumb if they expanded it. 12 is already too much. 4 was good with 6 being the max.
6 was the magic number. It gave enough teams a chance, but also kept the exclusivity and urgency of the reg season.
But if course it was fricked and now there will be 24-36 teams in 5 yrs and the reg season will be lost and the greatest sport in N America cometely destroyed

The Big 10 championship game is going to be the most pointless one ever played. They gotta do something different.
But of course the other way created ASU and Boise getting Byes. And we all said that was stupid. Now we want to go back.

How come it is mainly SEC fans who just love to whine about a playoff system. It’s not going back to the “old” days and it shouldn’t. Your conference just completely shat on your theory of a “regular season” having meaning when your teams just played 7 scrimmage games.
And I especially love how you guys love to use the polls as a measuring stick for anything. No one knows who the #1 team in this sport is today let alone who is number 5, 12, or 16. The playoffs will reveal all this and you guys just can’t handle the truth because you live your entire football life in hypotheticals and not reality. Yes, the playoffs are going to expand and they will keep expanding because that is what the public wants. The public is tired of a rigged system. I totally understand you guys like a rigged polling system so you can feel good about your team having a #11 by their name when we all know they will lose in the end. And so far in a playoff system magically the SEC hasn’t won squat. It’s almost as if the polls aren’t reality. You SEC guys can beg the committee to get 5 teams in but outside of UGA none of them have a chance because they are all flawed and having a ranked number by your team doesn’t change that. Deep down you all know it.

They need to expand to the College Baseball regional / super regional / tournament format!

Because this is predominantly an LSU site and thus more SEC fans here
Go over to r/CFB which is probably more pro-Big 10 and G6 even. And yet the sentiment is the same
Here’s a r/CFB post on playoff expansion if you don’t believe me
You can see most of the flairs from most of the top comments are non-SEC fans. I can show you plenty of other similar posts like that from that sub

I believe you. But I just don’t understand why fans can’t see reality. Playoffs are awesome for any school not named Bama, UGA, or Ohio State. How long would this sport stay viable if we stayed at a 4 team playoff and 7 out of 10 years those were 3 of the 4?
An expanded playoff now gives hope to every fanbase for those years they go 10-2 or 9-3. That is how you keep a sport going and increase fanbases. Sure, the southeast fanbases are already essentially maxed out, but there are millions of fans out there who would love to see their schools get an invite.
I agree that the regular season will be watered down but so what. That didn’t stop fans from spending hundreds on Texas-Ohio St or Georgia-Alabama. Now if fans stopped spending then it may be an issue but the dominant teams fanbases have proven to be total suckers for spending their money.

It's increased the pool of meaningful games at the bottom at the expense of stakes at the top. Last year's Ohio State vs Michigan game was the perfect example. Michigan pulls a huge upset on the road of a hated rival, and it meant nothing. Throughout all of college football history it would have torpedoed Ohio Stat's entire season.
1996 Florida State having to play Florida a second time in the Sugar Bowl right after beating them to finish the season undefeated and #1 says hello.

It's a little disingenuous to make that claim when the thread is about the Big 10 wanting a 28 team playoff.

Go to 16. Every team with a bye last season lost their first playoff game.

I can find other posts on it too. You want an expanded playoffs? Fine. But acting like it’s just SEC fans instead of lots of CFB across the country that are against it is wrong.

But it doesn’t matter if a few fans or even thousands of fans don’t like it. A lot of fans didn’t want a AFL and NFL merger that created the Super Bowl. A lot fans didn’t want inter league play in baseball. A lot of fans didn’t want the BCS created. None of that matters because the majority of fans wanted all those things. And the majority of fans want an expanded college playoff system because fans want more football not less.
The people of today who claim we shouldn’t have more than 8 or 12 teams are giving the exact same reasons as fans 25 years ago who didn’t want the BCS. They said what made college football unique was that you could have co-champions or a split vote. That sounds so stupid to even say out loud today. Tha5s what people in 20 years will say about those who didn’t want 24 or 32 teams in. Most people realize that regular season games were never intended to be the end all but part of the path to finding who the top teams actually are which is what a playoff does,

The sport operated for 100 years without one and is as alienating now as it’s ever been. Sure it’s piling on money but the product is far from as enjoyable as it was at its peak in the 2000s.

I am torn on this.
I do not want CFB to be like the NFL where Georgia can lose to Alabama in the regular season and in the SEC CG but then beat them in the playoffs.
I also don’t want one loss in August or September or a second loss in October to eliminate you from the playoffs.

lets open it up to 64 teams and then 4 more can do a play-in game so 68 teams. that should do it
Posted on 11/25/25 at 10:41 am to jlovel7
The only reason the sport operated like it did was because the powers of the sport wanted it that way and they were all in collusion with the bowl committees to keep their gravy train rolling. There are books written about how bowl invites were handed out under the table in October and then magically a bowl committee members daughter got accepted into a Michigan or ND. We were scammed for 100 years and many of you are too obtuse to even acknowledge it because your teams benefitted from it.
Thankfully, money is now what took the power away from the fat hogs who were slopping at the trough and made this sport a joke (seriously having sports editors picking National Champs and we wonder why it became a regionalized sport). And everyone spends money not just the top 15 football schools. They now realize they can fill playoff stadiums with Arizona State fans just as easily as Bama fans.

Might as well just go to 64 teams at this point
Knew this shite was gonna happen when they started this whole playoff b.s

Nah. The percentages say the playoffs will cap at 24 or 32. Then we’ll have a legit sport where winners and losers are determined on the field and not because individuals “believe” their 8-4 teams would beat another team who is 10-2.
What most if you are really frustrated with are your conferences who decided to expand to get huge TV contracts and now you’re upset that your team will have more losses than you are use to and that the schedules are unbalanced. That’s the real frustration I see on this board and that has nothing to do with a playoff system. That’s a conference issue. Look at Bama this year. 10 years ago they’d be sitting undefeated and ranked #1 because they wouldn’t have been playing FSU or Oklahoma.
