There was no GOAT talk about 2004 Oklahoma but they were favored by Vegas by about 3 points in that game.
So people still kept thinking Oklahoma was the shite.
Oklahoma was still blowing out people in their crappy conference.
Sports talk radio was like, yeesh, I hope USC doesn't get blown out.

it was 2003 Oklahoma that was getting premature GOAT talk because they were annihilating people. They added AD but lost some guys on defense so it wasn't the same team
It happened to the 03-04 team.
"The big, bold headline in USA Today on Dec. 5, 2003, summed up how most people felt about that season’s Oklahoma football team.
“Oklahoma: First Big 12, then history.” The subhead: “Sooners could rank with all-time greats.”
The article detailed how No. 1 Oklahoma could lose the next day’s Big 12 Championship Game to Kansas State but still reach the Sugar Bowl — site of that season’s national title game — because of the Sooners’ big lead in the BCS standings. The article went through the plethora of reasons Oklahoma — ranked No. 1 all season — was so dominant, then compared the Sooners to four of the all-time great teams: 1971 Nebraska, 1972 USC, 1995 Nebraska and 2001 Miami.
“After all, the Sooners are chasing a goal beyond championships, one that doesn’t come with a trophy and never gathers dust,” reporters Kelly Whiteside and Jack Carey wrote, that goal being the title..."

People forget how highly regarded OU was. They had a returning Heisman QB, AD and had 11 players drafted.

LSU 19 beats the huskers 95 about like we did ou in the peach bowl.
Our D was faster than any d they would have seen in 95 and Shelvin would feast.
Our O would knife them so bad

No...... all players in their prime in college????? Nebraska would score a ton of points on 2019 LSU. The problem is they would have trouble stopping us.

I remember after Oklahoma got blown out by K-State in the Big 12 title game Cody or whatever his name was said..."we were supposedly the greatest team of all-time and now according to you folks we suck."
Nobody wanted Oklahoma in the BCS title game but the computers.

There is some nuance in the discussion you are ignoring. I think best team ever is more about dominance over current competition than arguing teams built to win in eras separated by 25 years of athletic training, rule changes and etc

That 2004 OU team was supposed to have the greatest OL in college football history. Yeah, right.

Yeah, I mean, regardless of where you come down, O-lineman are 50 or so pounds heavier and more mobile than in the 70's.
A great team in the 70's has to be judged by their own standards, bc things like size and sophistication of offense have changed dramatically.

03 OU got significant goat talk prior to their late season collapse.
04 OU may not have received as much (if any) goat discussion, but they were very well regarded going into the title game against usc.
95 Nebraska and 04 usc administered the 2 most impressive title game beat downs in recent history.

LSU 2019 and Kentucky 96 were better teams

Watching Lawson on one leg run circles around Spencer down the stretch against LSU when I knew it was coming the whole time gave me ulcers.

No love to the 1976 Indiana undefeated team, no love to the UCLA teams with Alcindor or Walton, no love to the Army teams of the 40s, Oklahoma teams of the 50s, 1971 Nebraska, 1972 USC, late 70s USC and Nebraska, 2005 Texas, just surreal how simple-minded these journalistic simpletons are

Thoughts:
-95 Nebraska is the GOAT College football team and its not close
-01 isnt even the best Miami team ever
-2005 USC >>>>> 2004 USC
-2005 Texas is the 2nd best College Football Team ever
-Even though they lost the 91 UNLV team is still the GOAT

But by this logic you could say 2005 USC is still the GOAT even though they lost.
2005 USC made Texas look better than they were because USC's defense wasn't remotely on the same level as the 2004 team.
Brady Quinn shredded them and almost won the game on a final drive. They made him look like Vince Young.

04 usc beats 05 Texas.

so which one is the best?

2004 USC was the most complete team in recent memory. The 2005 USC offense was one of the best in college football history and covered up the defense.

He'll probably say the team that lost.
'86 Miami; seems if you don't win it all you're still the best.
