ESPN - Position U: Which schools produce the most talent at each position

ESPN Stats & Information dug deep into the numbers, culled details on all-conference performers, All-Americans, NFL draft picks and stars from the pro ranks, and came up with a formula to determine the official rankings for the schools best at producing quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, running backs, linemen, linebackers and defensive backs.
We limited the debate to the BCS and CFP era, including all players who appeared in games from 1998 through last season.

It's only fitting that the most high-profile position is arguably the most interesting in our rankings.
1. USC
Notable players: Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, Sam Darnold

Running Back U
How deep, talented and productive has Alabama been at the running back position the past two decades?
1. Alabama
Notable players: Mark Ingram, Derrick Henry, Shaun Alexander

Wide Receiver U
1. USC
Notable players: JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mike Williams, Marqise Lee, Dwayne Jarrett

1. Alabama
Notable players: Andre Smith, James Carpenter, D.J. Fluker, Cam Robinson, Jonah Williams, Ross Pierschbacher

Defensive Back U
1. Ohio State
Notable players: Marshon Lattimore, Denzel Ward, Eli Apple, Malcolm Jenkins
2. LSU
Notable players: Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Jamal Adams
This should be good

Definitely going to piss some people off.
Also looks like it weighs college and NFL success about even.

It ain’t easy covering those speedy wideouts from Indiana, Northwestern, Rutgers, Purdue, etc

Roby
Apple
Conley
Ward
Lattimore
Hooker
Bell
Those are 7 guys in the past 6 drafts that were taken in the top 2 rounds. 6 of them were first rounders; I would think no one else has that production over the past few years
If the goal is to get to the NFL, then OSU does it as well, or better, than anyone else

The fact they put this statement in there before the LB section:
Yet we're not even in the top 10 for RB should be an indictment on the whole process.

It's hard not to be mesmerized by all of the talent Georgia has produced at running back dating to Herschel Walker, arguably the greatest player to ever play in the SEC.

This is how they determined them
quote:
We weighted an All-America nod higher than an All-SEC selection. We had to come up with a metric to determine a player's performance at the next level that would function for all position groups, so we used average Approximate Value over the first four seasons (or fewer, if applicable) in the NFL. We needed a way to account for Notre Dame's lack of conference affiliation, and we used Brian Burke's NFL draft pick values chart to figure out how much more to value a first-round draft pick than a seventh-rounder.

20 year cutoff, which means Herschel doesn’t qualify.
There have been some good ones in the past 20 but the list is mainly Nick Chubb, Todd Gurley, and Knowshon Moreno. Great backs but not a whole lot of depth beneath them unless you count Musa Smith.

How are you gonna include Myron Rolle on FSUs DBU list but leave off one of the best in the NFL currently in Xavier Rhodes lol. This list was made to piss off people.

Chris Samuels was a fricking 6 time pro bowler in his 8.25 seasons. Embarrassing some of these baws are mentioned before him.

They included all of them. No where did it say it only looked at certain players. If you read it, it says notable players. Meaning the players listed are just players out of the whole list that were well known. No where does it say they were the only players considered for each school

Do Pittsburgh, Oregon, Auburn get passes for lack of depth? They also seem VERY top heavy.
Probably has more to do with how recent they have came through and thus less time to put up accolades in the NFL.

It loses credibility when it list Shaun Alexander. That was so long ago how is he even on the list still? He hasn’t had a 1,000 yard season since like 2005?

OSU has had a great run of late and has a long track record at the position.
LSU only had 2 DBs drafted from 1998-2004, and 21 since. Ohio State had 10 drafted from 1998-2004, and 21 since. Those first 6 years hurt.
Also, I'm not sure where they get some of the numbers. LSU has 9 consensus DB All Americans since 1998.

Not a GA fan, but the fact that they are not in the top 10 for RBs is comical.

It needs to look at performance in the NFL. Where you are drafted and what honors you got in college are meaningless to what your performance in the NFL will be.
Mathieu was a sure-fire top 15 pick but dropped for other reasons.
You have tons of guys from those schools drafted high that were complete busts.
tOSU and LSU are legit top 2 at DBU, but the WR lists are freaking hilarious. USC WRs have done jack shite in the NFL in the last 20 years outside of JuJu and Williams and Landry and Beckham have done more.
That doesn't mean LSU needs to be #1 by any means, but using common sense should show them their algorithm is utter shite.

Rodgers and Goff and nobody else is better than that.
Hell, Tom Brady and Chad Henne is better than that.
