One more to tie Duke and UNC for the most all time.
Now compare National Championships and their regular season strength of schedule over those years. If you play a poor regular season schedule and get a 1 or 2 seed winning your first 2 tourney games is not that impressive.

Love rooting against them every year. Just like MSU, Duke, Kansas, UK etc. I like rooting against the overdogs

Gonzaga is almost always guaranteed a top 3 seed because their league is so bad, which makes them orwnrially Over-seeded, and thus an easier path to the second weekend.

Thats not to say that they are not a very good program, but the run of "8 straight" and all that will cease to exist once they enter the Big 12.

The travel alone will wear them down over the course of the season from now on, not to mention the drastically increased competition in what is a great basketball league.

Throwing all your assets into a basketball program must be a great advantage. They have a coach who is a lifer and isn't going anywhere.

Gonzaga is absolutely a "New Blood" in college basketball. Anybody who disagrees has been living under a rock or is a hater. Their non league schedule is one of the toughest, year in and year out, they go out and play tough competition. I would love it if my school had eight straight Sweet 16s. We have seen their program go from playing in a high school gym, to making 26 NCAA appearances, to making a Sweet 16, to making a Final Four, to getting a brand new arena, to making a National Championship and becoming a New Blood of college basketball. They have become a national brand...everyone knows who the "Zags" are. Pretty freaking remarkable!

Agreed.

They never shy away from playing tough non-conference opponents (Their schedule just this year is ridiculous: Michigan St, Texas, Xavier, Alabama, Kentucky, Purdue, Baylor). And their ascent from fun mid-major program to perennial powerhouse has been pretty remarkable for a relatively small school in the Pacific Northwest in a mid-major conference.

They went 27-5 this season. Four of those losses were to teams seeded 5 or higher in the NCAAT. And this is a "down" year for them. I don't really pull for any team besides my alma mater, but if Gonzaga won a championship this season (or any season going forward) I would be happy for them. They are a modern success story in an age of college sports where the big conferences continue to get more and more money.

Clearly you don't follow college basketball.

Michigan St., Texas, Xavier, Alabama, Baylor, Purdue, Kentucky. That's who Gonzaga played this year. Only one of those games was in their home city. The myth that they just dominate a bad conference ended a long time ago.

As for their "bad" league, the WCC is annually a top 10 conference (RPI). Only the Mountain West has consistently been a better mid-major conf. And their success has almost singlehandedly raised the level of play in the conference as all have been chasing Gonzaga.

Every year multiple double-digit seeds reach the Sweet 16. For being "orwnrially Over-seeded" one would think they would often fall victim to upsets given they were an 8 seed in a 3 seeds clothes. Yet, they rarely do. Compare that with teams like Purdue and Virginia who play in great conference and often get beat by far weaker teams in the NCAAT.

I'm not a Gonzaga fan. But the days of saying they are just a product of dominating a "bad" conference have been over for a long time now to anyone who actually pays attention to college basketball.

Long way to go to match Tom Izzo and MSU with 25 straight NCAA tournament appearances.

And it’s really hard to win a National Championship.

Tom Izzo only has one!

Let's expound on that even further.

Since 1990 7 coaches account for 19 championships. So out of 33 years, 19 of the 32 possible championships came from 7 guys. 2020 had no champion because of Covid.

Coach K - 5
Jim Calhoun - 3
Roy Williams - 3
Billy D - 2
Bill Self - 2
Rick Pitino - 2
Jay Wright - 2

Of that list, only 2 coaches are still coaching in college. 4 are retired and 1 coaches the Bulls.

Travelling early in the year to neutral site tournaments and non-conf games isn't the same as going through a much tougher league schedule for 3 months where every other game is 2,000+ miles away.

I remember when they had to win their Conference Tournament to get a bid regardless of their record.

They were this little school in the Northwest nobody heard about unless you were a John Stockton bio fan.

Their coming out party in 1998 when they went 28–7 but still had to win their conference tournament, and were seeded tenth in the West regional of the NCAA tournament.

Since their 1998-99"Cinderella run, Gonzaga has made the NCAA tournament each year since.

The Zags beat seventh-seeded Minnesota 75–63, second seeded Stanford 82–74, and 6th seeded Florida 73–72 to advance to the regional finals.

Still every year for a decade they were still labeled a "Cinderella" almost derisively... It took major media and fans to come around to the idea that small schools can play and its not all Duke and UNC and that the Zags were hear to stay.

They are the Cinderella that wasn't a one-hit wonder but it took awhile for the public to realize they were here to stay and give them their due begrudgingly while still to this day (25 years later) still shitting on their regular season record.

They have made it as a one seed a bunch. This year they’re a 3 seed. They also made it as a 4 seed and an 11 seed in the last 8 years.

Ironically, the main culprit preventing them from winning the title, is the same one that built their success (Few). The man is a bottle job

Few didn’t have them athletically overwhelmed when they went up against Baylor…

I think a lot of the reason they got smoked by Baylor in the finals was b/c the semi final game absolutely exhausted them. Their opponent that game? UCLA. Who they play in Thursday. Should be another good one.

UCLA was a play in team that would’ve beat Gonzaga had the refs not saved the Zags.

Bumping this thread...

Is this the year Gonzaga wins it all? I think the winner of the Gonzaga/UConn match is your national champion.
