Their core programming is live sports and that's not what Werder is talking about. If anything they're still overstuffed with talking heads for shows like NFL Matchup and Insider

This is true. But his role as a commentator on those shows was probably the value he brought to the network.

He's a reporter, not exactly a hard hitting one since ESPN doesn't really do that to the NFL, who's been there 16 years. Sounds harsh but they can get someone cheaper to ask about Dez's hamstring.

ESPN spent it's first 10 years - it's core - covering everything in sports...that's what they did, that was their model...analyzing, highlighting and showing clips of sports.

This is what made them the market leader. They were the first to focus solely on sports, and they covered such a wide variety, but now if they don't have the rights to it, you wouldn't even know it exists, or if the College Football game isn't on their network, very very little coverage.

Tom Cruise has a line in the movie Days of Thunder:
quote:

Harry Hogge: What do you know about stock car racing?
Cole Trickle: Well... watched it on television, of course.
Harry Hogge: You've seen it on television?
Cole Trickle: ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Now unless there's a fight: crickets...

I wonder if Ed still hangs out at the Cowboy's facility because he's not sure what else to do.

If my company laid me off immediately but then asked me to work on a project implementation over the weekend I would laugh in their face.

He's basically saying ESPN has gone to the MTV business model.

Totally abandon your core programming and switch to entertaining 12 year olds

Pretty much what I was gonna say.

What happens without Merril Hoge and Ron Jaworksi to NFL Matchup? What happens to NFL Insiders without a number of analysts, former general managers like Joe Banner and Mark Dominik.

The games will continue to be played, the fans will continue to watch, and if certain fans want more information they can tune to the NFL Network.

Humankind will survive just fine.

So, if ESPN is going to pay all of these people through the duration of their contract, why not just tell them to continue working and that they will not renew their contract when it expires?

This. I've never met the guy, but by all accounts I believe you are right.

I may be in the minority here, but I don't fricking need NFL Insiders, NFL Matchup, The 6 blasting out race bullshite, First Take, etc.

Give me NFL Live, MLB Tonight, and whatever their NBA Show is called, with a college SPORTS (not just fricking football) show in there as well and run sportscenter/games when those shows aren't on.

I don't give a flying frick about the 20 talking heads they have for their wayyyy over played and hyped NFL shows. The same goes for all the other talking heads. They suck.

Give me highlights and sports, not some kind of spin or hot take.

Waiting for an ex-jock redo of Jersey Shore.

8-10 ex pro ball players in the major 4 sports. Put them in a big loft over a strip club.

I am with you 100%. And of my sports oriented buddies, I don't know any of them who watch all this stuff either. Our demographic is male 35-50. SOMEONE must be watching all of it, but I haven't figured out who yet.

Agreed, but when you have 3 or 4 channels with 24 hour coverage, you really can't just do highlights and sports.
