The whole Astros scandal had me thinking about the lengths they had to go through to secure a competitive advantage. It made me wonder, in the big team sports leagues (NFL, MLB, FIFA World Cup, NBA, and NHL) which one would be the easiest to cheat at? Imagine a franchise 100% corrupt and onboard with the mentality of winning at any cost, damn the consequences, and committed to break any rule necessary to secure victory for their team. I mean total buy in from the owner to the coaches and players to the ball boys and grounds crew. They can use any means at their disposal: cameras, spies, trip wires, steroids, snipers, strippers, etc. Which sport could cheating most easily secure a championship season in that sport before being potentially exposed and punished?

I reckon rigging a soccer league in a 3rd world country would be pretty easy

Rigging a league, sure, but cheating a men’s national team all the way to a world cup finals victory?

It's already happened in a 1st world country. Just google search the Calciopoli scandal in Italy.

No, it’s not technically a pro league and teams cheat all the time. Too easy. Just pay every bluechip a million dollars

Hence why I said World Cup. I would imagine a corrupt nation could use bribes to get a host spot (Qatar) and an automatic qualifying bid. However, how would said nation ensure their team won it all?

It’s not a pro league at all.

They’d have to start very young
Bribe kids from different/better countries to become naturalized citizens of Qatar and compete for them at that level

Don’t see it happening though

In pro-sports, I think the best way to cheat is to have the refs on your side (paying them off). There are so many variables that still require skill to truly cheat to make a difference. Which leads me to my answer:

FIFA World Cup

It would be very hard to do it for a full World Cup, but paying off a ref to call a penalty late in a tied game could absolutely help a team get through to the next round. It's harder with VAR, but totally doable. Soccer only has 4 officials, but one main one, who would ultimately be the only one who needs to be paid off. Even if one official in paid off in the others they don't make crucial decisions on every play.

Tag Team Wrestling. They’re constantly getting away with the use of steel chairs and green mist to the eyes.

Football

You can spray things
You can use tack towels
You can do stuff to wiring
You can steal signals
You can use illegal equipment ie screw in length

There’s so much you can do with nobody noticing

With the right technology, I would say NHL. Some sort of electromagnetic field under the ice that would selectively activate and act on opposing players skates to trip them.

To hop on the majority here, it’s FIFA WC.
If you have thirty min, google the 2002 WC scandal.
The refs made it possible for SK to beat both Italy and Spain, and reach the semis.
It’s a complete disgrace, as is the Qatari WC, where they are literally using slaves to erect the stadium, and their entire team is made of nationalized Brazilians.

MLB can be easy. You can cork bats, use pine tar, and steal signs (not like the Astros).

2002 World Cup. They didn't win it all, but they definitely got some help.

MLB

As said before, stealing signs, pine tar, corked bats,.

Most importantly if you Bribe the Umpire on the strike zone. So many close pitches it would be hard to prove.

Next would be NFL again with the refs calling holding or ignoring holding. I’m sure it’s not difficult to also listen in on the opposing teams head gear and get their plays.

NBA easily. Hell, you can travel, carry, stand in the lane 90 seconds, flop, and influence the refs to give you a superstar treatment. The amount of stuff the NBA lets players get away with is just stupid.
