I just think it's pathetic that in 2013 people are still a bunch of sensitive nancies. The word only has the power that you give it. Why empower the word?
False line of logic. Because it really has no logic. That word is the most expensive word in the English language. Maybe in the world. Some world travelers help me out. Perhaps it can be worse elsewhere.
It IS a free country. You will not go to jail for using the word, but it may cost you everything. Career, friends, family, arse-whipping. It is expensive.

That's my point, it shouldn't be. Why allow yourself to offended by a word not directed specifically at you?

The word is an insult on the basis of race with special negative meaning. If you use it against a person who is black you are choosing to demean their value on the basis of their race. That kind of insult doesn't apply to a single person... if you insult someone on the basis of a group characteristic you have involved the entire group. I can't think of another racial insult that really carries the same social meaning in the United States. Slurs against Irish, Jewish, Chinese were probably more relevant comparisons 100 years ago (they are still inappropriate but lack the same impact today)
And no obviously IMO no person of any race should be using the word. Using that word is bad even and perhaps especially when you are a black person IMO because it perpetuates its place in our society and carries with it an implicit statement of low self value and low group value.

maybe they aren't nancy's about it. you use the excuse that it may have been relevant 100 years ago. At what point in time have Jews not been persecuted against? When will it be long enough for blacks to get over it?

Then when are they going to make a big deal about Jay-Z, a NBA owner, who makes money off of that word?

The average Jews IQ is the highest of any group of people in the world, almost 30 points higher than the average blacks, so it's a lot easier for them to get over it.

Many believe the word should be taboo for all races. Cooper’s teammate, cornerback Cary Williams, addressed that point on Thursday.
“[A]t the end of the day, we look at . . . rap artists [and] some people in the locker room, that word gets tossed around,” Williams said, via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. “And what I think about my grandmother and my great-grandmother having to endure being called that name . . . . We as a black community sometimes pounce on somebody who uses it in a derogatory way when there are times in the black community when we use it freely.”
Some are warping that logic into an excuse for people like Cooper to use the word. Williams’ point is that no one should be using it.
“I think there’s no place for that word in anybody’s language, in anybody’s mouth or off anybody’s tongue, whether you’re black, white, green, purple, blue,” Williams said. “It’s still the same meaning, it’s still a harsh word.”

That guy has an opinion I agree with. The word should be driven out of our culture's vocabulary (along with the shitty parts of the rap and gangster culture it goes hand in hand with in our media).

Riley Cooper has been excused from all team activities as he seeks counseling for his recent actions.
The Eagles released the following statement: "This is all new territory and we are going to evaluate this timetable every step of the way. He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates." Cooper released a statement of his own and said he plans to "step away for a period of time" as he deals with his "inexcusable" actions.

NFL network teaser heading to commercial said they have breaking news on Cooper and has "left the team"

The aspect of this that isn't getting enough attention is that Cooper was drunk. I'm sure he doesn't want to focus on that because then it will seem like he's making excuses, and not taking responsibility for what he said, and he most likely will end up looking worse. That would also give the media another angle to attack him. But it is very relevant to this incident.
A lot of people are saying stuff like, "Now we see his true colors," or something to that effect. I just don't think that's accurate. Alcohol can make people do or say things OUT of character. Sometimes being drunk can reduce inhibition and make people be more truthful, but sometimes it just makes people say dumb things that they would not otherwise say.

definitely was drunk and people should take it into account as being one of the reasons he said it.
after that, move on! Jesus.
if this guy loses his job, it will be ashamed.
Its pretty much bullshite that this guy has to go to counseling over some shite he said while he was drunk, even if he is a racist. counseling is going to help him?
what does he have to do watch Roots for 7 days?
Id be more racist after the counseling.
and Im black.

Desean Jackson - Rap Lyrics
When will the eagles excuse Desean and when will Desean be required to seek counseling for use of the word?? This is getting way out of hand.

The part of this story that confuses me is who was he talking to exactly? Were there really alot of black people at the Kenny Chesney concert?
Posted on 8/2/13 at 12:08 pm to Iona Fan Man
Is counseling really necessary? What kind of counseling?
Posted on 8/2/13 at 12:09 pm to JBeam

I'm sure this is racist but I am guessing he was referring to security personnel, because I'm not sure what other black people would be listening Kenny Chesney in a group.

I thought this too, but I think his remark was directed at the concert staff
