The Eagles are already confused after meeting with officials yesterday. I just don’t see how you can play football without some incidental helmet to helmet contact. It’s impossible! Any person’s natural defense against contact is to ball up and lower you head to protect your vital organs and your face. It’s instinctual! You can’t avoid it even if you are wearing a helmet! And if both players instinctual lower their heads defensively, who is the penalty on?? This rule is going to turn the NFL into a shitshow! I’m all for player protection and there literally is no circumstance when it’s ok to lead with the crown of your helmet, but to outlaw all helmet contact is going too far. And to top it off, it’s all determined by the discretion of the ref in a split second moment! Freaking ridiculous! The NFL thought their ratings dropped last year, wait and see what happens when you start having flag fests every game. It will become unwatchable.

The NFL will be flag football in 10 years.

I think it takes a little longer than that but I 100% agree.

Reading about the meeting with the Eagles was kind of comical. They questioned the officials about Jenkins' hit on Cooks in the Super Bowl and there wasn't a consensus on if it would be a penalty now. Seems like a shitshow waiting to happen.

The helmet rule is insane and is in no way sustainable. You can pretty much call it on every play because of how vague the language is

The problem is the NFL doesn’t know how they are going to enforce the rule either.

Just another tool to control outcomes of games, they're going to keep pushing the limits until fans start to push back

The same way as most rules get enforced:

Relying on individual crews to set limits within each game that are consistent enough for the players to know where the line is. It's the same thing with hand fighting and PI calls.

You have to hope the actual calls on the field have consistency. How well that will shake out...who knows?

Wouldn't the line of scrimmage feature a penalty every play?

Need to forget these penalties for targeting and the helmet to helmet stuff. Instead, emphasize better ways to tackle and improve helmet technology. You can't eliminate helmets coming into contact with each other. It's a known risk and players need to either accept that risk or not.

Well..you can actually.

Get rid of the helmets.

Only reason why players are okay with slamming heads together is because they feel protected. I'm not advocating for this. It would make football a lame sport if they went back to leather helmets and leather shoulder pads, but removing the sense of security would eliminate the violence of the game.

Rugby players protect their heads just fine.

Its the helmet that is a weapon and gives people a feeling of security.

Years ago Lee Corso said remove the face masks to prevent head injuries and I kind of agree with the premise.

If I'm Goodell I'm pissed at the refs for shrugging and telling the players that they don't agree with the rules/it's new to us too.

Yep, little by little,b it by bit, they are going to completely destroy football.

It will still be called football, but it will be such a radically different game it will be completely unrecognizable and essentially a completely different sport.

NFL has already paid 500 million in concussion settlements
Could be the beginning of the end for the NFL as we know it.

They don't know either. Basically it's a "see now you can't sue us because we tried!" rule.
