many of his hits were legal, that doesn't mean they weren't dirty.

Deacon Jones used to head slap OL, that was legal then, the made stuff like that and what Tatum used to do illegal because it was dirty.

Conrad Dobler

Dude used anything and everything possible to beat his opponent, including a cast on his arm. He even made an opposing player break down and cry once.

One of my favorite old school football players for some reason. I love watching old DJ highlights. He was a beast.

I guess it depends on what you consider "dirty" to mean. IMO, if it's within the rules, it's not dirty.

an "incidental" nutcheck isn't against the rules, but it's still dirty

Like pornography, I know it when I see it. Just because there is not a specific rule prohibiting something doesn't make it clean. Its not like everyone in the league hit like Tatum or slap the OLman's helmet like D Jones. They put in rules because some of those things were dirty/dangerous.

Since you quote incidental there, you obviously mean on purpose, which would be against the rules, and an unsportsmanlike conduct. What Tatum did at the time that people are labeling him dirty for (helmet to helmet shots, leading with the helmet, etc) were not illegal at the time, correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess I can see your point. I still wouldn't put him on a level with Harrison, Romanowski, etc, though, because of that reasoning. JMO.

by "incidental" i mean they make it seem like it's an accident so they get away with it

And like I mentioned, it's still on purpose, so should be a personal foul, but Tatum's hits weren't "incidental", they were on purpose, because the rules allowed them.

Dan Deierdorf
Jack Tatum
Conrad Dobler

True story - someone asked Dobler about his reputation as a bad, crazy man. He said that he once saw Deierdorf pick up an opposing player and throw him at a goalpost.

BTW, on that clip of Tatum knocking Sammy White's helmet off - White bit a big part of his tongue off on that play, had no memory of the play, but hung on to the ball. That's toughness.
