Did OU screw up scrubbing WVU 3-0 QB Michael Hawkins for John mateer?

Mateer has gotten progressively worse and now has seemingly fallen off a cliff. It’s hard to justify not benching him unless the other QBs are complete trash which I’m assuming they are. That move has backfired. Hawkins dad trashed OU at the time when it happened.

I thought Mateer sucked last year too.
But yes they did- they brought in his old coordinator and kicked the better option (and legacy recruit) to the side.

In defense of OU, Rich Rod knows how to use mobile QBs. OU would have to change their entire offense around if they wanted to go all in on Hawkins at this point in his career. However, Hawkins made some throws against Virginia that were big time....under pressure and in the pocket. He has a serious arm and therefore could be just as dangerous in the pocket, with more experience, as he is on the run. More important no INTs, even his incompletions were good ones...more him just throwing the ball away instead of taking a sack or forcing it into the coverage. In other words high football IQ. I think OU made a mistake, but their whole offense is a mistake right now....starting with the OC and how OU develops QBs. So Hawkins might not look like he did tonight if he was still wearing an OU uniform.

Maybe that OU staff screws up QBs, and Mateer would look better, like Hawkins, without a finance bro as his OC

I believe this is the case. Every QB we have had under BV, excluding Dillon Gabriel, have regressed and lost all confidence. Our OL is always injured. It’s a mess.
