Saskatoon (/?sæsk?'tu?n/) is the largest city in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Straddling a bend in the South Saskatchewan River and along the Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway, it has served as the region's cultural and economic hub since it was founded in 1882 as a Temperance colony.[7] At its 2016 census population of 246,376, Saskatoon is the largest city in the province, while at a 2016 census population of 295,095, the Saskatoon census metropolitan area (CMA) is the 17th largest CMA in Canada. The City of Saskatoon has estimated its population to be 271,000 as of July 2017,[8] while Statistics Canada has estimated the CMA's population to have to be 315,200 as of 2016

At least 15 people are dead after a crash between a tractor-trailer and a bus carrying a Canadian junior hockey league team, a tragedy that struck at the heart of a tightknit city in rural Saskatchewan and immediately echoed through the hockey world and beyond.

I was absolutely gutted reading about this last night. The players are all 16-20 years old. I hope those in the hospital can pull through. It’s incredibly heartbreaking, I feel so bad for the families and communities.

Hockey is woven in the fabric of communities especially on the prairies. It’s crazy to think they were on their way to a game. In that situation being in an accident is something that never crosses your mind. Usually it’s just bullshitting with your teammates and getting ready for the game. It’s an incredibly sad tragedy.

Could you imagine being a first responder in a scene like that? It would be horrific. I think I would be completely worthless and unable to help anyone at all.

I don't know how first responders do it. I thought I saw a dude die when his truck rolled over and was completely crushed, and I was a mess. Dude turned out to be fine. But of all of the people to pull over, I was definitely not the one rushing to the scene.

Saw on SC all the tributes done around the NHL games, that was really neat. Such a sad/tragic event.

Last October I was on my way to get set up to cook on the big grill at a charity golf tournament about an hour away from my house. Backroads all the way. There were very few cars on the road at that hour and I probably passed one coming the opposite way every 4-5 minutes. Suddenly , and way ahead of me (at least a half mile) a car that was approachings head lights disappeared and all I saw was sparks flying. I immediately thought that somebody had flown through an intersection and tboned the car. But as I slowed down as I approached the area , I just saw darkness until I saw a cloud of dust a little farther up on the left side of the road. I turned my wheel left and started slowly going across the road to put my headlight over that way when I saw a limp body laying on the ground and 2 crushed vehicles. One 4 runner was laying on its roof and another SUV that was right side up alI 4 wheels. I pulled off the road and parked where my headlights would remain on him so I could see. My heart was beating pretty fast as I knew that I was alone in the situation.

As I ran to him I noticed that he was laying belly down and one leg was completely twisted around and an arm was all twisted up too. He had blood coming out of his mouth and his nose into the dirt. His torso was heaving like it was in its death throes but he was not responding as I knelt beside him looking for any kind of sign that he could hear me. I then ran to both vehicles and shined my phone light inside expecting the worst. But I saw no other person in the vehicles. Then I started to think “oh crap, there is another body somewhere.”

After I assessed the situation for about 20 seconds, I called 911 and told them to hurry as a man was thrown from a vehicle and I was the only one there and that there were 2 vehicles and I couldn’t locate the another body. It took 8 minutes for the first police officer to show up. That was a terrible 8 minutes for me as I felt helpless to do anything to help the man. I even stood by the road one time and waved 2 drivers down and asked them to help me until somebody got there. Both drove off and said they couldn’t help. That was frustrating . I went back and just knelt beside him and put my hand on his back and hoped he could hear my voice saying that help was on the way and that he wasn’t alone.

The paramedics arrived a minute after the cops and as I was the only witness , I told the cop what Ihas seen and then we canvassed the area looking for another body. He and I searched the area and more cops showed up to help but we could not locate another body between the 4 of us. Finally, some guy that owned the property there showed up and said the 2nd vehicle was his and that it was parked there. His parked SUV was at least 30 feet off the road. All we could figure was that the guy dying on the ground had run off the road at a high speed and maybe tried to correct and got almost parallel to the parked car before impact and rolled over the vehicle. But his 4 runner came to rest a good 80 feet beyond that car so he had to have been going very fast. He might have been rolling well before it impacted the SUV because his body was on the opposite side of the parked car which tells me it was rolling and that he was thrown before it hit and rolled over the SUV.

Nevertheless, the paramedics tried their best and a medi vac came and landed to get him to an ER but the cops told me they didn’t think he would live .But that was a lonely 10 minutes before help arrived and I hope to never experience that again. Not sure if he lived or died but he was barley clinging when they were putting him in the chopper.

Awful. Not sure how you didn’t follow up to see if he lived. I’d have to know.

Hard to get info.

We pulled a guy from a local lake out who had his hand taken alomst all the way off by his prop after he was thrown out.

I knew his name and the hospital he went too. When I called they said they had no record of him coming. HIPPA laws won't let them tell you shite. I just wanted to know if he died.

He called us a few weeks later to thank us. That was a wonderful call.

What a terrible story with these young men.

It's crazy in these accidents how some walk away with minor injuries while others die. The toll that must take on you for the rest of your life must be unimaginable.
