it actually still wouldnt excuse making up a story that she Died to cover your gaeyness would it? just having a fake GF would certainly do the trick...
The biggest WTF is this: His grandma REALLY did die and he was going to get loads of pub and sympathy legitimately for her death...there was no reason to double down and throw in the haymaker of a dead GF.

Being that he is Mormon and lets say he is actually gay.....
he may have just been telling his parents, friends, other family he had a girlfriend in Palo Alto. This goes on for years without them meeting said girl. They were supposed to met in Hawaii and perhaps meet his family, but she doesn't show. After this charade for 2 or 3 years his family starts thinking wtf? Manti does the old my gf died from cancer bc what kind of effed up parent would cal shenanigans on their son after dropping a bomb like that?
the car accident may also have been used as an excuse as to why she could not travel to met his family.

It could have morphed into a fame and pub thing once he realized he was getting heisman hype and he was having a good season. I'm certainly not accusing Te'o of being very bright.

This is the best possible theory I've heard so far, but why would he have his fake girlfriend die 6 hours after his grandmother?
