For a national story like this, a prosecutor (likely in CA) will make an example of the perps to deter future acts.
If there is a chance of any criminal proceeding, then Te'o has probably been advised by counsel not to say anything that would be part of a grand jury investigation.

After reading the USA Today story, I'm back to believing Te'o and Tuiasosopo are a gay couple.

It's not a crime. It can result in a lawsuit but that's about it.

That girl actually sent Ronaiah the photo to use, though he was deceptive in how he would use it. All this charity work/embezzlement is speculation from Te'o's uncle.

Lawyers tell people on trial to cram it. The story being put ou since everything broke is he is a victim. Victims do not "lawyer up"
ETA: the only way there are any court proceedings related to this, is if there is wire fraud, which seems like a probability but I reiterate, victims, pawns, and/or witnesses do not lawyer up
Look at the FACTS, they're pretty damning.
