I have a separate question that hasn't been brought up. Lets assume for a minute that Te'os story is true and he had no idea this girl was fake up until the point he said he did.
He claims his brother was the one who told him that the girl had died. Who was the person who told his brother this? How did his brother have contact with any of the "supposed" family members of his gf.
Of course we could just chalk this up to Teo being trolled initially then milking it for what it was worth therefore making up how he found out she died. But if not this part is very strange and suspicious to me.

She also was supposed to be at Senior day in South Bend, didn't show.
His friends on the team had to be duped, at least his close ones. They had to know about her if he was so in love with her, had to ask about her.

No shite. This isn't 2002 when all there was was maybe some jpegs and IMs.
It is 2012. There are all these resources where there is no way someone could effectively fake being a real person over an extended period of time in a personal online relationship.
Do you have Skype?
Do you have a Facebook page?
Do you have an iPad or iPhone to FaceTime?
Do you have Instagram?
No one could say no to all that and lead someone along.
Someone with Down's Syndrome would sniff that out.
