Seems like the Morton signing might be an insurance policy for using Fiers and/or McHugh in a deal to get a true top of the rotation guy.
Maybe Luhnow's plan is :
Ace type in trade
Keuchel
McCullers
McHugh or Fiers
Feliz/Devenski/Morton

why do all these teams think their starting pitcher is worth the entire farm system. I mean Chris Archer is a good pitcher, I would love to have him on the astros but lets put his 9-19 record aside as being on a bad team, the guys era was still over 4 and his home era in a pitcher friendly dome was 2.65 and it was 5.44 on the road in 100 innings of work. The way they talk about him you'd have to mortgage the farm to get a guy coming off a pretty downright horrible season and you'd like to think he'd bounce back the same way I hope keuchel will but you just dont know. Seems silly what they mention TB wanting for Archer, Sale id give up Tucker and all of them in a flash because he makes us an instant contender and threat in any playoff series.

I don't think anybody would argue that Archer had a down year last season. I think most have seen enough from him the years prior and know what he is capable of...and that's being an ace. Add in that he is young and controllable for the near future, something that would be underrated considering we are in the early part of "our window" with this core
I do agree with your other point however. I'm starting to think we (or most fans of any team) just don't fully grasp how much trading for a big name like that would cost.
In the event that a trade does happen, I'm 99% sure there will be plenty of people (and maybe rightfully so) not very excited about it with how much we had to give up. But that's why people in the front office get paid a lot of money...gotta find a way to make it work

There will definitely be people beaching over any trade. We gave up to much will be said 100 times regardless of who we get back.

The control over Archer is a huge part of his price in a trade

Don't even want Archer

What does this mean, Prom? Jwho was referencing Morton salt, I was referencing their slogan. Just having fun.
Random, off topic thought here...
This reminds me of watching the Braves on TBS in the 80's. When it rained at Fulton County Stadium, they would pull the tarp out and it had the Morton's Salt logo that said "when it rains it pours". Pretty awesome. Nothing like seeing that shot on the screen and hearing Skip Caray say "we are in a rain delay here...while we wait it out, please enjoy this rerun of Sanford and Son"

The Astros have acquired catcher Brian McCann from the Yankees, per an announcement from New York. Prospects Albert Abreu and Jorge Guzman will head back in return.

I was never a huge proponent of trading for McCann, so I'm meh on this. But we didn't give up a ton, Abreu is a decent prospect but he's still far from the bigs. Never heard of Jorge Guzman before. Not sure how much cash the Yanks are sending
ETA they're sending $5.5M per year

Didn't give up a ton. Abreu had enticing potential I guess but I like the move.
The money is nice too

I'd prefer McCann over Castro

I'd prefer Gattis to catch most of our games but if the front office doesn't think that is possible due to injury history this move makes sense.

Haha thankfully we were able to work out a way to keep Springer!!
Posted on 11/17/16 at 4:35 pm to 5 Deep
We go from Springer to these two guys

If Gattis and McCann stay healthy that catcher platoon should be pretty damn productive
Posted on 11/17/16 at 4:37 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
Yankees are gonna make run for Trout.

Yeah we didn't give up Springer to get McCann so that's already a win.
Either way you get a decent bat at a position you need production at. It gives you options to start either him or Gattis depending on who the pitcher is. You also didn't give up a lot to get him. If both McCann and Gattis are healthy, you got 2 good catchers.
