I think aside from Cole we’re gonna be waiting around until late and pounce on a pitcher who gets left out in the cold.

Yeah, I can't blame them for it. Seems to make the most sense.

Saying you're gonna make a run at Cole is just as much common sense as saying you're not going to be able to afford him.

He proved himself this year, IMO.

Perfect case scenario for him in his money season.

Cash in and crash the hopes of some other team.

Yeah I’m sure they’ll offer him something. I’ll be stunned if he actually comes back.

I just can't see the Astros being the high bidder.

And I can't see Cole and Boras taking anything less than the highest offer.

Astros cant afford to be the highest bidder for Cole. I truly believe the priority should be Springer long term over Cole. You've got 2 quality starters in Verlander and Greinke. Trust that you'll be able to develop LMJ or Urquidy into a quality #3. #4/#5 will be filled, not worried about those spots, but long term team comp I don't know if you can afford Cole.

I don’t want any part of like an 8 year deal for Cole either honestly. If he was willing to take a really pricey 5 year deal or something sure but he’s not so

What about more years at a slightly lower AAV but the total value of the contract is higher? He'd want a strong no-trade because if injury or a decline happens, they'd try to trade him away. Like 10yr 30mil for a total of 300 instead of someone going 7 years 37mil for total of $259mil.

Wouldnt be surprised if Astros get linked to Wheeler or Odorizzi this offseason. Reports are that they were trying to land Wheeler before getting Grienke anyways. Whether or not they want to fork over the draft pick BS that comes with QO's now, who knows? But I think they'll be a little buzz there at least, specifically with Wheeler.

specifically with Wheeler.

FWIW he’s been mentioned a few times on Houston sports radio

Don't see the Astros giving up a pick for either tbh... Teheran, Pineda, + others make more sense

If Cole leaves, what draft pick do the Astros get?

Verlander, Greinke, LMJ, Urquidy, Spring Training winner of 5 spot, as many have assumed

I'm prepared to not get anything in the Wheeler/Odorizzi range, but it's hard to believe they won't get SOMEBODY. We saw this year how fast rotation depth can evaporate. Starting the season with Framber/Peacock/Armenteros at #5 is asking for it.

They will get a cheap reclamation type

Or maybe someone like Gibson for 2 years 20m or something. I would be really surprised if they don’t add pitching help from outside though

Yeah.

I don't see that happening.

In fact, no one allows home runs on low cutters. Since 2008, between the regular season and the playoffs, there have been 1,741 cutters thrown by a righty to a righty in the rough location of Harris’ pitch that resulted in fair contact. Of those, a whopping two (not counting Harris’) went for home runs. If you’d prefer to include foul balls, the sample is even larger, but the results the same: batters have made contact with 3,160 low and away cutters, of which again two became home runs.

From an article on Will Harris, unfortunate result for a really good pitcher
