Maybe I’m still giddy about winning the WS and/or signing Abreu, but after witnessing all of these contending teams commit competitive suicide, I’m actually proud of my team acting responsibly
There’s a lot of time left before the trade deadline and the ‘23 playoffs
I’ve got a good feeling about some things falling into place.
‘17 WS exorcised some demons
‘19, the scandal, and ‘21 put a monkey on their backs
‘22 WS is going to let these guys relax and play
I’m going to relax, watch, and enjoy

Vasquez at 3/30 would have been plenty reasonable and responsible. I'm disappointed we let him get away because of Maldy.

Agreed. He's 32, could have gone 4/40 or 5/50 with options and still been responsible if not frugal compared to some deals we have seen.

Yeah I’m happy we’re not getting saddled with one of these stupid big deals, but I don’t think for a second that Crane had any issue with 3/30 on Vazquez. That was a perfect deal for us.
The duck hunter has decided Maldy is catching and that’s that jack.

I think it’s reasonable to assume we were never given the option to sign Vazquez
Probably 60% Vazquez, 20% Dusty and Maldy, and 20% our pitching staff
I don’t fault Crane

If we're rolling with Maldy again there's got to be a serious coaching commitment to getting Lee/Diaz significant playing time. Not the 1 game a week garbage that ran off Vasquez. They need to groom a replacement for Maldy because the free agent market for catchers going into 2024 doesn't offer any solutions
Maldy has hit a combined .179 the last 2 seasons. That's a low bar for the young guys. Even if they struggle, they're probably right there with Maldy.

d'Arnaud is the only one worth pursuing and he will be coveted due to scarcity.

Someday you'll appreciate the greatness of Machetay. All this time you've spent pining after a catcher, you've failed to appreciate the beauty of a .179 hitter.

His career average is .209, so he's due for a rebound season.
Plus he colors his hair funny and the kids all love it.
ETA: He did set career highs in HR and RBI last season.

I think we're a bat or two short of repeating. Maybe a starting pitcher too. We know we have an automatic out when we get to the C spot. We won't get much from the 8 hole. And I worry that Pena will have a regression this year. Bregman needs to have a whole year like his 2nd half this past year. Is Altuve going to be OK? He struggled mightily in the playoffs. DH is going to suck, as of now, when Alvarez is in the field and LF is gonna suck when Alvarez DHs. I know we are all more relaxed coming off of a championship, but we better not be done this offseason.

Abreu could still be a big boost.
I agree the big need right now is a bat in LF. We just won a WS fairly solidly with Maldy and Chas getting the bulk of the 8/9 ABs, so it can obviously be done.
Another SP is a potential need that can be addressed by trade... right now we have 6 guys ready to go, the key will be staying healthy and limiting innings.
And the bullpen is almost a repeat of last season, which is a great thing. They were nails all season and even better in the playoffs.

Yeah, I'm far from a sunshine pumper, but no moves right now is not even close to a trigger for me
We made one great move for a team that lost 2 games total in the playoff WS run, and that was with ZERO production from some usual playoff producing players/spots
The fact that Brantley and Gurriel are still out there comforts me that they will be a part of this team when it comes October '23

If he agrees to it, Yuli really is perfect for the utility guy. He can play 1st, 2nd or 3rd and DH if necessary. And if Brantley's healthy, there's your left fielder.

I hope I never have to experience 40 year old Yuli playing second

Sad but true. And a competent GM would have offered another year or two at that value to assuage the year of playing aside Maldy.
I don't think that would have helped. He has to want to stay here and when you have an offer to be the catcher instead of a catcher, he'd take it.
I'm still amazed that all y'all really thought we would sign some free agent catcher. Dusty and Crane want Maldy. It's obvious that Click didn't. Dusty and Crane will get what they want.
No free agent catcher would come here except for a ridiculous amount of money or one that isn't that good.
