I'd rather have Murphy, all things being equal.
The price for either is what will determine the better deal.
Too many years for Contreras seems bad. Too many good MLB ready players going out for Murphy seems bad. The latter could easily be worse.

I'd rather Contreras since it includes no prospect capital... but it's not my money.

Would cost a 1st round pick.

We have maldy and 2 outstanding young C prospects I would ride with that and go grab a proven LH OF bat.
I think it's a given now that Giants sign Nimmo, so Benintendi is a big need.

2nd round pick, plus $500K in international bonus pool money.
Which is still less than the likely cost for Murphy.
ETA: Rodon, Bassitt, and Eovaldi also rejected QOs... the cost woule be the same, and if the Astros signed a 2nd QO reject they would also lose their 3rd pick and another $500k.

Hey, y’all remember that time the Yankees got swept in the ALCS?
They just committed 9 years and $360 million on keeping that lineup together.
Good times!

Actually I don't remember that.

Yeah, me either. I do recall them getting no-hit at Yankee Stadium during the regular season though.

I kind of lean this way. Maldy is on an expiring deal and his bat is less or a hindrance with Abreu being subbed in for Yuli. Get a quality left field and let Diaz/Lee battle it out as backups for replacing him in 2024.
I'm not in love with this plan to have Yordan as primary LF. He's surprisingly solid defensively but as a big man with previous knee issues, I'd rather save the wear and tear on him. He's here for his bat, not his outfield defense.

yeah... I've been on route to India for about 20 hours. My original thought was, "No hit and swept in the ALCS"... somehow it didn't come out that way.
I've been telling y'all for years that I'm an idiot.

Looks like Contreras going to STL
Posted on 12/7/22 at 10:18 am to 5 Deep
Yep. If we can build a deal for Murphy around Garcia let’s do it. If not focus on LF and roll with what we have at catcher
Posted on 12/7/22 at 10:23 am to 5 Deep
Hopefully means we’ll have the best offer for Murphy

Laugh all you want. Lee and Diaz are really good prospects and will be backups. See what they can do and make a trade at deadline if they suck arse.
Catcher spot isn't really important for offense if you add a legit LH bat to OF.
And whomever said we should trade Garcia for Murphy not playing with a full deck. You can't go into season with only 5 starting pitchers when #6 would be bielak.

Is Scud Farkas barred from signing pitching

Nobody signs up willingly to be a backup to shitty Maldy.

I know you're a C guy
Be patient
You would have hated Contreras behind the plate

If they did that, I'd be down down for it. Diaz is a big league bat even if he never catches and I'm more than willing to give Lee more chances even though it's clear the Astros brass are not big fans anymore.

They'd obviously sign another proven pitcher with the money saved by getting Murphy. Again, it's about total allocation of resources (money, picks, prospects).
