For purposes of continuing our federal grants, we're mandated to make these threads.
Since we're all here, let's get on to some topics of importance. Not sure if y'all have followed baseball world response to the Brown firing but backlash against Crane has been vocal beyond just the Astros orbit. Everybody else sees it. He's ruined his legacy by attaching himself to Bagwell and puppeteering baseball ops. Apparently the Astros job isn't seen as a particularly desirable opening and theres some sympathy for Brown that it was a doomed job to begin with because of Cranes mandates that can't coexist with each other... and to that point it's true. Cranes vision lacks cohesive operability.
-The champion window is always open.
-We're not going to pay market rates to retain stars or sign elite free agents
-Rebuild the farm
-Don't trade off the major league roster
-Don't go above the luxury tax threshold
With all that, you end up stuck in purgatory. You're not committing to one strategy or another. The mandate from Crane and Bagwell is basically, go compete but dont spend any money to do it, restock the farm but dont trade anyone attractive from the roster to do it.

Crane's ego has gotten too big. Needs to focus on his golf course and frick off with his input for this franchise

Not defending Crane at all, he made his bed. But he also propelled a middling org to heights that no fan ever thought they would see. And currently, the only crash has been competing for division titles (yes in a bad division) but hasn't ran completely off the tracks yet. It likely won't get back to the "standard" and will get worse but until then whatever. Just feels like the ebbs and flows or professional sports.

Another thing I don't buy. Only 30 of these jobs in the world with tens of thousands of industry people that would give anything to hold the title.

That should be the story. But it isn't. Now his reputation has gotten him labeled as the Jerry Jones of baseball. Meddlesome. Difficult to work for. The guy who fired his GM after winning a title.

Owners evolve. Artie Moreno won a World Series, and the Angels went to the playoffs 5 times in 6 years not long after that. They've been to the playoffs once since 2010.
Whether it's winning 2 World Series and his ego has gotten in the way or whether it's because he doesn't want the embarrasment of another "scandal", Crane is way more involved these days. I'm sure he wants to win, but either he doesn't realize he's probably hurting more than helping or he doesn't care how his influence is affecting the trajectory of the franchise.
I'll always be grateful and recognize that the Astros have won 2 World Series under Crane's ownership. But the franchise needs a reset in philosophy or it's going to continue floating adrift.

100% agreed, and they are at another inflection point so soon that he may could redirect this thing a bit so soon after making the wrong decisions after '22.
Will he make the correct baseball decisions? Based on recent history probably not, but the opportunity is certainly there to correct this thing to the best of their abilities. Who knows, maybe he finds a guy that he can trust to run the baseball side of things without having to be so overly involved on the day-to-day. But it doesn't really seem in the nature of a guy that's been as successful as he has been in life to give up control. It's just a complicated human piece of it all.
More likely than not he still leans on Bagwell too much, they hire a guy a little more analytically driven and unfortunately muddle around.

I'll hold judgement until after a GM is hired, but I'm expecting to be disappointed.
It'll be someone Bagwell likes and then they'll hire Ausmus as manager and we'll do it all over again in 2-3 years.

Might even be Ausmus as GM. Maybe Biggio as manager? Hell, Lance Berkman was a college head coach.

I think the point is that it isn't a desirable job to the ones that would really make an immediate impact.
