We're gonna get right back in it, do stupid things at the deadline and then lose 10 in a row.
That was my complaint last year when it should have been evident that the team was not capable of winning anything significant. We had a rotation of call up no name pitchers that had career runs that are no longer even on the roster, backed up by AAAA players getting timely hits that are now out of baseball or hitting Mendoza level.
But this year is different in that you do seem for the moment to have some injured pieces able to play AND a probable Triple Crown Winner. Your point still stands. Not close to being enough for a playoff run.

They were 5 games up in the division at the trade deadline last year and you are trying to argue there’s better case to buy this season
If they had sold off last year up 5 games then every season ticket holder should stormed the stadium. It would have been absolutely unprecedented

Say what? Better case? frick no
Just a different one giving us the same end result
I can't imagine YOU thinking I want them to BUY anything
WTF?

As bad as the team is, it’s 2 games out of first. If we were 6-7 games or more out of a playoff spot, that’d be different. Then selling would be the way to go. But if/when we get to the point of blatantly punting on a season when we’re 2 games out of first, I’m gonna want out.
I lived through 2009-14, when this team was trying to win and then stopped trying to win. And while the 2011-14 pain of not trying to win was necessary for the golden age, those seasons sucked royally, way more than this season.
We should not do something major and stupid at a high cost at the trade deadline that mortgages what little long-term future this team has, just to win a division this year. But I’m all for any low-cost moves that help. And I’m against anything that kneecaps this team for this year, barring a bad stretch that leaves us 7 or more games out of first on deadline day.
Make the playoffs and see what you can do, especially in the American League, where a 15-game winning streak takes you from well under .500 to command of a wild-card spot. The postseason has almost always been a crapshoot. I doubt this team does anything if it gets there, but not making the playoffs sucks. Been through enough of those years.

Your post makes it seem like last season was doomed from the start. If Parades, Pena, and Hader or just a combo of the three just play a few more games that team easily clears 90 wins. Even then, they were only eliminated after the 161st game of the season.
This season? I agree, there is a much better case to sell.

After 104 games, they have the 21st best record out of 30.
Or, they are the 9th worst team of 30.
What does the DAT say?

Pena and Brown, along with Hader, if we’re going to do it right
Ideally with the blessing of a GM-Elect
But I expect absolutely nothing to happen until the offseason

Hard to argue for keeping a team intact with being a bottom tier team.
But I guarantee you that Dana Brown is pointing out that the Astros are 8 games over .500 against winning clubs - only team in the division with a winning record versus winners.
That’s going to be his battle cry to get us 3 never-was has beens to get then the division.
Me, I say trade em all. Yordan, Peña, Paredes, Diaz, Brown, Hader.
Punt and rebuild.
