Javier threw 1? innings in his first rehab outing with the Astros’ rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. Manager Joe Espada said Javier threw 35 pitches and his fastball touched 95 mph.

“My reports said that he came out feeling really good,” Espada said.

Javi touching 95 is interesting. Ill have to look but I dont think I remember that before. Seems like he was maybe 93? And then right before his injury he was like 90-92.

In 2022, his four-seam fastball averaged a career-high 93.8 mph.

Pretty common to come back from TJ throwing harder because of all the weight and conditioning work required during rehab

I thought the same the other day and went back to watch highlights of the no hitter vs the Phillies

He was painting 95 but think mostly he stayed around 93ish. He was just on one that night

2020 92.2
2021 93.5
2022 93.8
2023 92.8
2024 91.7

I knew i remembered his velo being noticeably decreased. He may not keep that 95 over the long haul but I'd be happy if hes sitting consistent 94 again.

Yeah, his 92-94 seems faster because of the arm slot of his release and the movement on his pitches. Always thought he threw harder.

As long as he keeps that movement and harnesses the command, he should be fine.

There seemed to be a clear line of delineation velocity/spin wise where it became very hittable up in the zone.

In 2021-2022 it was around 93-95 mph with 2350 rpm they hit about .200/slugged about .380

In 2023-2024 it was around 91-93 mph with 2250 rpm they hit .245/slugged .450

He absolutely lived off his fastball, threw it about 60% of the time until 2024 right when he got hurt and it was getting shelled.

I would bet on him being much closer to the 2021/2022 version coming off TJ and likely being in great shape

First line was repeating your 60% nugget so editing that out. The slider/change had some pretty good results, mid .300's slug on both pitches in 23 & 24.

That's pretty encouraging the secondary stuff played like it did despite the fastball stinking.

What I hope, based on what they've been doing with 4-seam fastball dependent pitchers, is they get Javi in the lab with a sinker grip that he can just sprinkle in 10% of the time to RHH. It seems to be the MO for the org with righties with a good fastball as just something with a wrinkle that could get weak contact.

The line that separates his “invis-o-ball” from a fat AAAA fastball?
