Cole had an amazing year and his value is high. Would be a good time for him to extend. There is risk if he waits till end of season... He could have a worse year, have an injury, etc...
I'm thinking 4 years $110 million

Personally I would let Verlander walk unless he takes a 2 year deal and focus on Cole.

I think he would be most wise to take that deal (or perhaps a little more $$$ like 4/120) but Boras is gonna look for at least a 6 year deal like Corbin just got since Cole will be a year younger next offseason. It's going to be a hard fit.
Meanwhile, the system keeps cranking out stud pitching, and Verlander could be the perfect bridge/mentor on a shorter deal to the next wave after Whitley/James/Martin/Bawkake.

Have you seen the specs on that deal? Its absurd how backloaded that deal is. 35 million the final year in 2024
Verlander would be my number one choice as well. Our farm system is loaded with pitching potential and while Cole would be great, I still have hope we can keep most of this core together.

The Astros could have a contract extension in place with Justin Verlander prior to end of spring camp, owner Jim Crane said Friday.
“I don’t think anything is final, but if it’s going to get done it’s going to get done before we get out of here," Crane said

I see absolutely no way he takes that. Assuming he takes a chance on himself and he ends up having another healthy successful season, he'll get way way more than this. He is also a Boras client so he ain't gonna let that happen either.

According to sources, Justin Verlander and the Astros are moving toward a deal on an extension. It’s believed to be a two-year deal in the $66M range.

Nice. Sures up the rotation a bit

Really too bad Ol’ Jimmy Crane won’t spend money on his ball club...

Wow
33 per for a 37-38 yo?
I love JV and think he’s more valuable than Cole come playoff time, but.............

I’m not mad at it. Probably ensures No money for Cole though

Still can sign Cole and backload the deal where the big money is paid after JV is off the books
Posted on 3/23/19 at 8:25 am to 5 Deep
Bingo. We should be able to sign both if Cole is willing to load the money towards the back end of the deal

Starter Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros are in agreement on a two-year, $66 million contract extension, a league source with knowledge of the deal tells ESPN.

They think what I think. JV is like Nolan and likely to keep his elite stuff past 40. It's a good move. And like paying Beltran in the end as a glorified hitting coach, JV will be invaluable to the development of Whitley, James, etc.
