I think Bochy had to play in that series because Ashby was hurt. He suffered a rib injury after Joe Ferguson gave him a knee to the ribs in a play at the plate in Game 163 for the division title.
ETA: I think I’m wrong. Ashby played in 2 games in the ‘80 NLCS.
