re: Dan Marino: I would have thrown for 6000 yards in today's NFL

Romo averaged 8.5 YPA last year, best in the league
In Dan's best statistical season ('84) he averaged 9.0 ypa. And that's with his receivers getting mugged up and down the field and with no running game/credible play action. During that season he completed only 362/564 passes. That's tied for 65th on the all time list. You don't think he might up those numbers just a tiny bit in today's game?
In '84 he averaged 14 ypc. At that rate he'd only need to complete 428 passes to reach 6000 yds. 428 completions puts him at 10th place all time (ironically right ahead of Romo).

I'm going to stay out of this debate because clearly I have no dog in the fight.

Ok bud. Plenty big and strong, and what the hell does fast have to do with passing yards? How many "fast" quarterbacks have thrown for over 5,000 yards? Try zero.

Marino was fast, watch his release!

And his feet, he had great maneuverability in the pocket. for as many times as he threw the ball he was one of the least sacked quarterback of his era
Bruce Smith faced many times once said Marino was the hardest to sack because right when you knew you had him and you bring him to the ground you realized he didnt still posess the ball

His best season in 1984 was 5084 yards on 564 attempts, completion rate on 64.2 %, yards per completion was 14.0
Transfer that to 2014 when 11 teams had over 600 attempts passing, 2 teams over 650. It could be realistic that Marino would have 650 attempts in a modern offense. Assuming the same completion rate, and yards per completion, he would have had 5893 yards in his best season.
It would have been very hard to hit 6000, but he could have had the most yards in a season. The record owned by Manning is 393 more yards than Marino's 1984 season but Manning had 90 more attempts.
Add in that he would also throw to WR's that would be way more open due to stricter coverage rules AND wouldn't be hit nearly as much or hard due to QB protection rules.

That wasn't the point...it was to put the claim in context...because, you know, Marino is talking about what he could do in the NFL right now.
Averaging 8.5 YPA is ridiculously difficult, something even the most elite of QBs rarely do. Brees has done it once, Manning once, Brady once, Rodgers twice. Hell, Marino only did it in 1984...which was clear outlier as he never hit higher than 7.6 in a full season again.
So, even if I grant that he could bottle up the same production level from 1984 and translate it...it isn't reasonable to assume that he could tack on a bunch of attempts and maintain the same efficiency.
Combine that with the simple fact that 6k passing yards would make his team 10th in total offense without ever running the ball...like someone else posted, Marino almost certainly could challenge the current record, but no one is passing for 6k.

The fact marino did it in 84 is incredibly impressive.

You do know that as a team the Dolphins ran for 2000 yds that year right?
I also think Nathan had 700 yds rushing. If Overstreet was alive, he would have had been a monster in that offense and much more balanced.

Just how many more passes per game does Marino think he would have attempted, and how many more yards per attempt does he think he would have, or how many more of the passes he attempted does he think he would have completed? The Dolphins were attempting more passes than runs when he was playing. Would he have wanted an even greater imbalance? What impact would that have on winning games? If the Saints and Drew Brees are useful as evidence, then more passing doesn't translate into more wins.
Marino's interest in his personal statistics in a team game may be one of the reasons why the Dolphins weren't more successful as a team. Why does he focus on personal statistics instead of whether the Dolphins would have benefitted from the current rules?

There's a reason he never won shite, and it's not entirely a lack of a running game.

That's probably the #1 reason. He was at his apex at the same time the Bills were a powerhouse and just had a better all around team than Miami.

quarterbacks don't need to be fast.
He had a howitzer to go with the quickest release in the history of the NFL, and where the frick did you come up with "as strong"? How the frick would you know?

I still don't think he would pass for 6k+

Dan Marino played in an era where safeties ran like linebackers and played for a team that had zero intention of running the ball and had no real defense.
Marino was a great QB. To pretend he's above the Aaron Rogers' of the world is foolish though.

Players in the NFL are far more athletic than during Marinos time. But let's discredit that, per usual.
Marino > Brady, Rodgers, Manning and Brees
Those scrubs

I dont think its calling anyone scrubs when its not even debatable how Much league rules are in favor of offense now. Even baf qbs put up god numbers

I'm too young to have seen Marino. I started watching in 98 when he was on his last legs. All I can go by is film. I get the argument for fastest release, and possibly the greatest arm ever. But I don't agree with him coming in and being head and shoulders above the elites in the league right now. He'd be very good because of his talent, but not 6k plus yards or close. Just my opinion.

True, but the Lotts and Atwaters of that time didn't have to defend DEs playing wide receiver like Megatron, Marshall, D Thomas, etc
