Yes it is. You get taxed by state laws in each state you play the game in.

You do not pay more taxes than earned.

Yes you do. In California you also pay taxes on breathing the air, taking a shite and walking your dog. Don’t let the mensas here tell you otherwise.

Darnold will receive $178k and pay $249k to California in taxes for his time here, losing $71k.

Don’t think he is hurting for money. It’s fine.

Agree. He will pay it then get it refunded eventually. I have to file like 40 different state tax forms so I get it but it is Still BS if you ask me.

The NFLPA could easily stop this by demanding they not be required to play in states that have such a punitive tax structure.

Obviously, OP’s half arse info has made whatever point in he is trying to make difficult to figure out. His first post sounded like Darnolds total year contract performance incentives were getting dinged by Cali taxes which would not be the case

The numbers are real. This situation is based on the absurd way in which California tax law is written. So you end up with this insane situation where Darnold is going to pay more in taxes to California than what he actually earned while within the state. It’s abusive and exactly what happens when you elect total losers.

How does their pay work for the playoffs?

If he gets paid from a different entity for the playoffs this wouldn’t be the case. It would be, 8/365 out of his playoff pay.

I can’t imagine California could tax you on income from a different entity that you never worked for in their state.

Does his playoff pay go to the same entity that pays his salary, and then they pay him? For tax reasons like this I wouldn’t think so

What he is trying to say, I think, is the extra income for winning/losing causes his entire pay for California to be taxed higher, so actually ends up paying more than he makes for the incentives

I think

He is, but his choice of wording is so purposely obtuse it’s ridiculous.

I’m also very curious how this actually works.

This is one of the few threads I’d actually be very curious to have Mingo involved in. There’s almost no way it’s that black and white, my guess is the major league sports and entertainment CPAs have creative work arounds here.

This is correct. I moved from Pt. Loma in 2019 and they still send my wife and I a letter every year to file taxes. Never was a citizen of thier state, but causes me a headache every year getting them to recognize that I was a Tennessee resident and military exempt on orders.
