Another thing that obviously benefits Chipper is how people always talk about how great of a switch hitter he is. Chipper was obviously a superstar, but he also benefitted from being a legend in the South, while Vlad is just a stud ballplayer that is maybe underappreciated to the casual fan.
Both get in, but Chipper makes it quicker.
Also, the fact that Chipper was more dominant at his position than Vlad was. Vlad's a borderline top 10 RF of all-time at best. Chipper's a top 6 3B of all-time.

If thome doesn't get in first ballot it will be a travesty
Not really. Thome is a very good HR hitter, but not much else. and he has hung around to just hit them. The HR is overated by the voters cause of the roid thing. I know Thome didn't do roids but he had the benefit of the socalled livlier ball era after the 1994 strike.

If you can do something only a handful of players have ever done, you deserve it. Especially when you factor in how important home run records are in baseball history.

I think the bar for pitchers has changed more than for hitters.
I guess 600 is the new 500 in terms of home runs.
But for pitchers...is 200 the new standard for wins? Pitchers don't go wire-to-wire nearly as much as they did, so wins are out of their hands even more than they used to be.

I know this, but they are NOT as important as they once were.

Probably not, but I think a guy like thome, who was a great and pretty consistent player, should go in first ballot.

I wish he would. I like JIM, a great player and good for the game. BUT.........................

Unless something goes wrong, he will hit more than 600 home runs. And he did it never really being mentioned as a steroid user. Not saying he didn't use, but I never hear his name lumped with others.
THat's why I think he gets in first ballot. He'll be a guy that traditionalists LOVE.

Larry Jones is a first ballot HOF, period.
Also add:

He's the 2nd best switch hitter in baseball history.
I would have Mantle, Rose, & Murray ahead of Jones.

Murray ahead of Jones.
Murray
.287 BA
.359 OBP
.476 Slugging
Chipper
.306 BA
.405 OBP
.535 Slugging
Murray does have over 700 more career hits, 70 more home runs, 400 RBI and 100 more doubles.
Chipper has more stolen bases, less strikeouts, more walks, more triples, and he played in 700 less games than Murray.

3,000 hits and 500 Hrs you can count on one hand how many players have done that.

Howard might get in first ballet just to piss off the stat heads.

And THIS is what sucks about the MLB today. I mean Hudson had a 5-2 lead with two outs in the ninth and the manager pulled him. frickING sad. Pitchers are pussies nowadays compared to the past. PAMPERED PUSSIES.
