In Joe Dimaggio's career, he hit 361 home runs. He struck out 369 times! In a 13 year career, the most times he ever struck out was his first year, which was 39 times! Also, he didn't play for 3 years during his prime to go and fight in WWII!

He might have been overall the best baseball player ever with apologies to Ted Williams.

Other than being paid $21 a month, DiMaggio's service was as comfortable as a soldier's life could be. He spent most of his military career playing for baseball teams and in exhibition games against fellow Major Leaguers and minor league players, and superiors gave him special privileges due to his prewar fame. DiMaggio ate so well from an athlete-only diet that he gained 10 pounds, and while in Hawaii he and other players mostly tanned on the beach and drank.

getting a tan was the only storming of beaches he did

I could be wrong, but if you were a person of notoriety, they would give you a position that you probably would not die in.

It's a catch-22, they help massively with the fund raising effort and provide value in other ways; however, them getting killed is a massive, massive morale hit.

That is mostly true, but it didn’t keep Ted Williams from having his jet damaged over enemy territory, and he flew back to the base, landing without wheel gear.

I will say his wingman was no slouch

If Williams didn't lose 5 years of his peak years. He was 22 when he enlisted. Got back when he was 27.

quote:

the totals for the five seasons he missed were added to his ledger, Williams would have hit .342 with 3,452 hits, 663 home runs and 2,380 RBI. Those numbers would have lifted him from 69th to sixth in career hits; from 18th to fourth in home runs; and from 13th to first in runs batter in.

To me the most amazing stat is the hit streak and then the 0-3 with a walk to end it, then right after that another 16 game hit streak

I mean 73 straight games with being on base is absurd. I bet Bonds probably is the closest we have had to that since his huge HR year when they were walking him.

Ted didn't see combat in WW2. The Marines nade him an instructor.
DiMaggio was a better all-around player than Williams, much better in the field, and a better and faster base-runner.
Ted said once if he could run like Mantle, he would have hit .400 every year.

Jimmy Stewart flew a heavy bomber in unescorted deep penetration raids into Germany. Probably the most dangerous job in the war.
