Could the NIL/Portal era create fewer “busts” in the draft?

Seems some obvious ways NFL teams miss on players is taking guys who play in lower divisions and can’t develop vs better competition and also guys who can’t handle being a pro once they get a lot of $$.

The portal era has top colleges finding most of those underrated prospects and teams can now see them vs top competition.

They’ll also see how guys react to making hundreds of thousands or millions and they’ll have a much better gauge of how they’ll do on their own in the pros.

You will rarely, if ever, see a small school player taken early in NIL era. Anyone worth a damn would have transferred.

someone threw a stat out there during the draft that it was one of if not the lowest "small" school drafts versus the big colleges. i think this is already happening

Wasn’t the first small school player taken this year the DE from Southeastern?

Sure, it’s not to say you’ll eliminate busts, but it helps decrease the odds based on 2 major factors some picks become busts

He had plenty offers to transfer but chose to stay. Went early 4th.

But the days of the Trevor Pennings going in the first are probably over.

Craziest thing you'll never see is a player like John Matuszak getting drafted 1st overall in 1973 from the University of Tampa.

His team lost to cellar-dweller K-State from the Big 8 (31-7) but they did beat Vandy (30-7).

The School eliminated the Spartan football program after the 1974 season.

While Matuszak became a 2x Super Bowl champion and more importantly was in Goonies.

Yes. If memory serves only 5 FCS players got drafted. 3 from the Southland and 2 from NDSU.

Another thing is more players are playing in multiple programs, which better prepares them to adjust to new schemes and circumstances for when they jump to the NFL. It also means anyone who plays well for multiple teams is less likely to be the beneficiary of a particular coach, system, supporting cast, etc. If you play well for Eastern U. and then transfer over to Western U. and play well there too. you’re probably the real deal.

So yes, I think the NFL gets a better read on the top prospects in the portal era.
