Ya I'm just going by what was at the last World cups.
Figure 10-12 but other countries had more.

If they moved up the olympics to april, then sure. Not in June or July. You could do it in Houston, combo of mobile/mississippi coast/new orleans, or maybe south florida.

Somehow they made it happen in 1996...

It would be interesting. The whitewater venue and BMX venue would have to be man-made like they did for Sydney. Other than that there are ample facilities from Pensacola to Baton Rouge to host.

Notable Venues:

Pensacola Civic Center
Pensacola Bay
Mobile Bay
Mobile Tennis Center
Mobile Civic Center
Mobile Convention Center
Mitchell Center - USA Campus
Ladd-Peebles Stadium
Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum
Superdome
Tad Gormely
Morial Convention Center
Turchin
Alex Box
PMAC
Tiger Stadium
Alario Center
Lake Pontchartrain
Lakefront Arena

You'd need to build a swim/dive center and Olympic Stadium. I'm sure there are plenty of sites (city park NOLa) for the smaller outdoor events and ample number of shooting ranges.

Here are the Venues that would have been had we won the bid.

World Cup?

Would be spread all over the country, not just regionally.

Would they sell tickets?

The 1994 World Cup sold more tickets than any other World Cup and soccer is much more popular now.

No.

At least not anytime soon.

You can throw the World Cup out because that would be the entire country hosting and we just lost out to Qatar for that one anyway.

As for the Olympics, nah, it would have to be Summer games and those go to far bigger cities typically than anywhere on the gulf coast.

Dallas or Houston could maybe pull it off, but that's a bit out of your scope.

Qatar has more money at its disposal than every state in the South has. And it aint even close.
Texas's GSP in 2008 was $1.224 TRILLION dollars. Qatar's GDP for 2010 is estimated to be about $130 BILLION.

While Qatar has some pretty absurb per capita economic stats, Texas still laughs at them

No! It would NEVER happen. Not enough funds available to go around.

World Cup?? You need venues to host a World Cup and the Gulf South does not have any worthy of hosting a FIFA World Cup.

Olympics? Well, they would have spend a lot of cash to do it and I just can not see the city of New Orleans being able to fund it either. Too many politicians trying to get their share of the profit.

When ATL was awarded the '96 games the Metro Area population was 2.5 Million.

Houston could host the World Cup. Games could be played in Dallas and San Antonio. Typically for the World Cup, games are played hours from the actual host city stadium. Houston is also a very international city with great corporate support.

That would likely be true now but Birmingham was a major site for soccer during the 1996 Olympics. In fact, the USA vs. Argentina match set a Legion Field attendance record at the time with over 84,000+ in attendance. Bham hosted about a dozen soccer games during the 1996 Olympics.

They played a couple world cup games in Orlando back in the day. I think it was in '92 or '94.

32 Teams and 3 Cities?

World Cup is a Country thing, not just a state thing.

Sorry I didn't break down every possible city that a soccer game could be played in the USA. I was just using Houston as a center point and just named a few cities within a short drive. Could have been any city really.

On another note, I will be watching every post you make. You better bring your A-game with every post. One mistake and I'm calling you out.

But there is no host city, just a host country. The 2010 World Cup wasn't the Cape Town World Cup, the 2006 wasn't the Berlin World Cup, 2002 was actually split between Japan and South Korea I believe.

The World Cup? Sure, because it's around the entire country.
