I think the sport in question would matter quite a bit but for the most part I’d say yes, the best D2 college team is probably better than a few d1 schools in their respective sports. I do believe football would be in question though although schools like umass have been pretty awful recently so who knows, one of those really good Valdosta teams might could sneak up and bite someone

Lol absolutely

The GOAT possible WNBA lineup would lose to BRCC's worst ever team though

D1-AA Applachain State beat highly ranked Michigan in football, although that’s not normal. I’m sure the top D2 school would rip a bottom tier SWAC school a new one.

Pitt St beat us in football one year while I was at SMS

I know South Carolina lost to Augusta St and Auburn lost to Barry in basketball

I remember there was a period a few years back where Duke would play the Division 2 champs every year as one of their 2 exhibition games, and Coach K said that a championship team returning most of their starters could finish in the top half of the smaller conferences in D1.

Seemed believable based on the results. This was when Duke had some really strong teams from 2010 to 2016 or so, so the team was never pushed to end, but they definitely beat some D-1 teams by more.

Syracuse lost to LeMoyne College one of those years and I don’t think LeMoyne was even a top D-2 team.

Of course they can. The leading scorer for last year's Division 2 NCAA tournament champions, Ryan Hawkins actually transferred over to Creighton this year and made second team Big East and was the leading scorer on a team that made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. You underestimate how good the top D2 players are.

In baseball there are a handful of very good D2 schools in Florida that always have guys drafted. Central Missouri, Delta State, Chico State among others that could probably compete in D1.

Didn’t Bellarmine almost beat Duke in Cameron last year?

Tampa probably has a better team than 60% of D1 teams. They’re usually loaded. The AZ and FL Jucos have some great teams also

Nah, Duke won by 20 plus and it was a pretty standard game.

But I think Bellarmine was already D-1 last year but just ineligible to make the tournament. Just like this year, when the poor guys won but had to stay at home.

Chaminade University, which is DII, beat a Ralph Sampson-era Virginia team when they were ranked 1.
Louisiana College beat a Skip Bertman coached LSU team in the early 90s. The LC president made a point of bringing that up at graduation.
I think it’s a lot easier to do that in baseball or basketball, with a hot pitcher or scorer.

Most of the top d2 schools in the past were built off of d1 transfers in baseball, and were easily more talented than the smaller d1 schools

Yes, probably near the bottom of the pack though.

One of my alma maters has played for six football national championships since 2002 winning four.

Some of those teams could have had winning seasons in FCS, and on a perfect day, they probably could have beaten a low-end FBS team.

Our basketball teams have been competitive in D-II, and we've given a few D-I schools a scare in exhibition games.

what sports are you talking about here?

I've seen NAIA schools (which is supposed to be "lower" than even D2) beat D1 teams in basketball and baseball/softball

in fact... the newly-crowned NAIA MBB national champion Loyola-New Orleans Wolf Pack beat Southland Conference member University of New Orleans 80-72 back in early November
