This is their first winless season in FBS play if you don't count the 2020 season where they only played four games. But you're correct, they need to return to the FCS as there isn't enough support from the alumni or the school to sustain a winning program at the FBS level. Since joining the Mid-American Conference in 2012, they have achieved the following:
2012: 1-11
2013: 1-11
2014: 3-9
2015: 3-9
2016: 2-10
2017: 4-8
2018: 4-8
2019: 1-11
2020: 0-4
2021: 1-11
2022: 1-11

And on top of that, they get hit with an excessive celebration penalty that moved the ball back closer to their own goal line.
