Louisiana Lafayette

ULL has been whooping the shite out of baws lately. They went 13-1 last year and won a conference championship. The Cajuns have won their division 4 years in a row and have 3 straight seasons of double digit wins. That’s very impressive and hard to do at any level of college football. Billy Napier has left the Ragin Cajun football program in excellent condition. In comes new head coach Michael Desormeaux, who talks like us and puts the potato salad on the side of his gumbo. He inherits a talented roster with 11 returning starters, although he will have to replace Levi Lewis and half the defense. There may be some natural regression after the best 3 year stretch in school history, but the Cajuns should remain as legitimate Sun Belt contenders until proven otherwise.

Prediction: 10-2 (7-1 Sun Belt)

Tulane

It’s hard to be very optimistic about a 2-10 football team. The good news for Tulane is that Michael Pratt is healthy and the schedule is significantly easier than last year. The bad news for Tulane is that they are still Tulane. The Wave should at least match their 2021 win total after playing UMASS and Alcorn State the first two games. I don’t see them going on the road and beating K State, though it is possible. It is not likely that the Greenies will win at Houston or Cincinnati either. Every other game seems like a toss up. I think Tulane will return to being an average FBS team like they were the previous few years, but I wouldn’t expect anything spectacular. Tulane just needs to improve on offense, defense, and special teams.

Prediction: 6-6 (3-5 AAC)

Louisiana Tech

La Tech had about a 5 year stretch when they were pretty good but it seems they’ve declined and are back to being a mediocre program. On a more serious note I don’t think there was a more snakebit team in America than the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Of their 9 losses it seemed like every one of them was a 4th quarter comeback or a game winning field goal. The way they lost to Mississippi State was just absurd, my 3 year old daughter could have preserved that lead. Moving on, Tech will have an entirely new coaching staff and look to improve on defense somewhat. The offense has some talented weapons and should be good. I expect they will be sodomized by Missouri and Clemson, but the rest of the schedule is very manageable. I think the Bulldogs will move in the right direction but defense will hold them back.

Prediction: 5-7 (4-4 CUSA)

Louisiana Monroe

ULM is probably the toughest place to win in America. You have no fan support, no administrative support, no tradition, crap facilities and a tiny stadium, and I believe the smallest budget in the FBS. Recruiting is garbage and the only things to do in Monroe are to visit the aviation museum and smoke meth. I do think ULM got the right guy for the job though. Terry Bowden is a veteran coach who gets the most out of his team and Rich Rod is a stable offensive genius. The Warhawks are getting a little bit better all the time. However, the schedule is really unfavorable as it always is. Texas and Bama will both drop 50 burgers and ULM opens Sun Belt play with probably the best team in the conference. When you start out 1-3 the rest of the season is usually an uphill battle

Prediction: 4-8 (3-5)

He also took the head coaching job at Jacksonville State last fall so he's no longer at ULM.

You will be very surprised at the defense. The new DC they got Coach Power did wonders at FCS school SFA and was a huge reason they got to the playoffs. They will be solid.

Despite your absolute embarrasment still thinking Rich Rod was on the school in Monroe's staff you did a pretty good breakdown of my Bulldogs although I am praying for more than 5 wins.

Cajuns will not go 10-2 this year. Their offense got completely gutted in the transfer portal. I'm thinkin they are lucky to get to 7-5. On top of that the absolutely lazy hire of Matt Desormeaux probably wont help. With the success they cajuns had under Napier they had a very good opportunity to land a big to coordinator from a power 5 school that was looking to get into being a head coach yet they take the safe route.

I have serious doubts about this. Not that our recent success and uptick in recruited talent wouldn't have been a positive to convince such a coordinator; however, I just don't think we had the money.

While individual contributions to our athletic department have continued to rise, I believe we're still middle of the road in the Fun Belt. Would have made it tough to afford the kind of coach you described, AND pay his coordinators well, which is what we were able to do for Napier and hope to be able to do with Dez.

I REALLY wish we had Napier this season with the schedule. We wouldn't have lost the guys we did to Florida in the portal, and our OOC schedule is Florida State, Rice and Southeastern, with the FSU game in the middle of the season, not right out the gate for Games 1 or 2 like pretty much every time we've had a P5 matchup.

As a Tech Alumni, I cannot disagree with your sentiment on our upcoming season. However, there is a lot of optimism around Coach Cumbie, and I think we might just put up a decent fight against mizzou.

Could not have been more disappointed with this hire. Napier finally built the program into a viable stepping stone for a hungry up and comer to follow him and we go the USL good ol boy route to replace him. Napier guts the coaching staff on his way out and we're left with a guy who has no coaching network because he's only ever coached at UL. I give it 4 years, a couple of 7-5 seasons followed by a pair of losing seasons before he's fired and all of the progress of the Napier era is undone.

Yeh, I agree here. I’m not saying Dez is a bad coach, quite the opposite actually, but Cajuns should’ve capitalized on the their success with a smash hire. Dez will be fine, but damn….G5’s don’t get too many opportunities like Cajuns had to elevate their program & distance themselves from the Herd.
I’m just glad Tech got up & comer from TTech, basketball too. We’ll see….I’m optimistic about our season though.

My hope is that Dez is an amazing coach/recruiter and his ties to the area will keep him here if he maintains success. Nothing would burn me out more as a fan than a coach coming here, winning, and leaving town for the next few years like Arkansas State with Freeze/Malzahn/Harsin.

I'm good with being a consistent stepping stone to coaches succeeding and moving up, if it keeps us in 10-3, 11-2 & 12-1 type seasons. Beats the hell out of someone looking to get "comfortable" and use it as a retirement job with stagnant results (see our head basketball coach).
