COLUMN: College athletes should refuse to return to campus this summer until they're allowed to form a union and negotiate the terms. The time is now

College athletes, your moment of ultimate leverage has arrived. It’s time to use it.

Essentially, as college administrators and coaches call for football players to return to campus in early June and plot for a season beginning on time in September, they want you to be a science experiment.

Don’t agree to it — at least not without getting something in return.

There’s never been a more opportune time in the history of the NCAA for athletes to form a union and wield real power to negotiate their compensation, their working conditions and their rights.

It’s long overdue. And it would benefit the athletes and the schools, whose resistance to collective bargaining has led them down the path of endless antitrust lawsuits and feckless attempts to placate lawyers and courts that only serve to blur the lines of amateurism and expose how arbitrary the entire system is.

The unintended consequences of college athletes unionizing would destroy college athletics.

Sounds like a good way to get rid of sports besides football and men’s basketball

Everyone hates the idea of CFB players getting a cut of revenues that they are the main driver for. No clue why. I don't see any posters on here going to work everyday for room, board, and free training.

I mean, this is a total straw man, but I'll bite.

Many people, every year, accept that level of scholarship in pursuit of future careers.

When you push for radical change, expect things to radically change. And in the case of student athlete's getting paid - the unintended consequences are such an unknown that it makes people pause (naturally).

Of course, the "pAy ThEm ImMeDiAtElY!!" crowd has probably never made a calculated risk in regard to their lives/livelihoods, ever.

Its a Dan Wolken article which means he forgets to mention a lot of important stuff. There is zero chance any of that happens.

1) students at state universities are not allowed to unionize, without the state's permission

2) Last September the NLRB proposed new rules to make all student(private/public/under/graduate..) ineligible to unionize.

quote:

Organizing has proven more difficult at private institutions, in large part because students at private universities are subject to the rulings of the NLRB which chooses whether to recognize those students as employees with bargaining rights.

Most of us are professionals and have a degree to prove it. College football players are not professional football players.

And I would actually consider that temporarily if it meant I never had to pay another student loan the rest of my life

You’re getting the opportunity to audition for a job where you could make tens of millions.

And worst case scenario, you’re getting a free college education.

Anyone who complains about that is just greedy.

Shiny hook, but sure. The student athletes are compensated for their role at the university. They receive scholarships, stipends, medical/rehab, dieticians, food, room & board, and tutoring. They are given things that have a tangible and equitable value in return for them competing at the collegiate level. Even if they don't go pro they are provided all the tools to enter the real world debt free with a degree that can provide for their families or experience that in conjunction with the degree can open doors for them to continue in their sport in a coaching role.

If I could have worked for four years without pay but all of the benefits included after high school for life thereafter I would have accepted on a dime.

Find a walk-on who does everything the scholarship athletes does but without most of the benefits that cleans the stadiums/arenas and weedeats on Sundays for stipends to pay the gap between scholarship and loans and ask him what it's like to see what these poor scholarship athletes get. Ask him how bad many of the athletes with all of the free stuff, a stipend, and Pell grant money have it. The poor college student angle is asinine. Should there be the ability to earn likeness money? Absolutely. Should athletes unionize and demand more beyond that? F*#K NO!

frick Ed O’Bannon. I bet if you asked players around the NCAA, the vast majority of them would want to bring the game back.

Also, college athletes should be able to make money off their own name. They don’t need a paycheck or anything but college stars like Joe Burrow or Zion should be able to cash in on their fame and hard work on college. Which is kind of contradictory but we need those games back.

And gourmet food.

I'm sure many people would love to spend the 6 hours a day working out, and not have to worry about a bill.
