CFP Director: No talks of expanding CFB Playoff field, debates good for college football

After what he described as one of the most contentious debates in the five years of the College Football Playoff, executive director Bill Hancock said there is still no movement to expand the playoff beyond its current four-team field.

"There's been no talk about a format change in the meetings of the commissioners and the presidents who manage the CFP," Hancock said Sunday, adding that he didn't expect any changes to the selection committee's protocol, either.

This season's debate was different from years past because two-loss Georgia, which lost in the SEC championship game to Alabama on Saturday night, was seriously considered for the fourth spot -- so much so that some committee members voted for the Bulldogs at No. 4. It was the first time a two-loss team that didn't win its league was in the conversation. Georgia didn't get enough votes, though, to finish in the top four, landing the Bulldogs at No. 5 -- ahead of Big Ten champion and No. 6 Ohio State.

"This was the kind of debate we wanted when we created the playoff," Hancock said. "We wanted diverse opinions, we wanted people who wouldn't hesitate to state their feelings, and man, we got it."

What does this even mean? They don't care about crowning the champion just starting a conversation?

Money trumps all and controversy creates cash. System is broken.

Mike Mccarthy got fired late on an NFL Sunday and less than an hour later, all sports talk radio was still talking about was the college football playoff decisions.

You can't buy that kind of publicity and relevance. It's exactly why the NBA secretly loves all the tmz type drama in their league - - it's keeps your sport in the forefront of conversations.

Hancock is a stooge, but he's right. A playoff where essentially veryone gets in does not cause any buzz. This system does. That's what they want. It's all about money, bottom line. The cfb playoff is a business.

In the end it doesn't matter, we'll still all watch and they get loads of cash and no one can do anything about it. What, is Ohio state and Georgia gonna break off from the ncaa and their leagues over this stuff? Of course not.

Why lose sleep over any of this stuff? They have screwed all of the bowls up now, but they still don't care, as long as that dr pepper cash keeps growing, they couldn't care any less.

Are you saying that an 8 team playoff would co a better job of crowning Alabama champion?

Four teams is perfect

Ohio State barely made the playoffs in 2014, and if the Big 12 had a conference title game either TCU or Baylor would have gone over them.

Do you think that Ohio State was the best team in 2014?

Debate is good? That is saying “not really knowing who is the best teams that should compete for our title is good for the sport”

What the frick?

I think the reason behind 4 teams is sound. There are the P5 so a conference champ is going to be left out. Most years more than one. Ohio State deserved to be in and beating two of the other three in back to back weeks proves it.

Stupid. The only people who should be allowed in are conference champions.

What is broken about it? Who should have got in that didn't? Georgia? They lost twice, once by 20 points. Ohio State? They lost by 29 to PURDUE of all teams. Michigan? Embarrassed BIG TIME in their last game and 2 losses. UCF? They didn't play anybody. Washington? Florida? LSU? All 3 loss teams.

They should televise the committee meetings and make money from the stations who carry it if these debates are so much better than going to an 8 team playoff.

I would take anything Hancock says with a huge grain of salt. Back when he was working for the BCS, he swore up and down they were happy with the then-current system and they weren’t considering a playoff. He’s also the same guy who said they were going to stick with the semifinal games on New Year’s Eve. Look how long that lasted.

The great thing about 4 is if you go undefeated in a P5 conference, you get in.

Which means you at least can control your destiny. If you’re a one loss team and don’t get in, you can bitch all you want. But if you hadn’t lost that game you’d be in.

That’s why 2004 sucked so bad for Auburn. There was literally nothing else we could’ve done. We beat every team in front of us.

I can't recall.

The point is that the playoff was designed because the question of who the best team was sometimes had more than two names. It has never had more than four.

The current playoff is perfect.

So you don't even know specifics about the CFP yet say it's perfect?
