Is 138 fans worldwide justification to even bother with this?

The "Below the Rim" edition.

Why is a WNBA player on the cover of the NBA game?
Because you can play with WNBA teams and do most of the same stuff on 2k you can with regular NBA teams
I tried it before, it was weirdly fun bc of the differences in how the game is played and how the players handle

Most people who play online on 2k are playing MyPlayer, not just playing random games with actual NBA teams

Will Madden have a Lingerie Football Leaguer on the cover?

That’s a real nice layup Candace.
I would've put that shot in the seats. And I'm an absolutely horrible basketball player.

The smile during the layup seems very unnatural.

I remember when NBA 2K, NCAA Football, and Madden only made one cover and folks used to make "alternate" covers and sell them.
Y'all some spoiled asses complaining about one cover of like 5.

cool. so why not create a free download of a stand alone mini-game from the PS or Microsoft store instead? or an optional DLC you could download after launch? why waste developers on something maybe 1-2% of their consumers would even use?
this is the equivalent to Madden adding a "build your own sideline watercooler" feature into their franchise.
is it not? or is there possible further motivation to waste time on this? you're not just wasting time on a meaningless feature that will knowingly not bring in more consumers, but you make an intentional decision to take development time away from a game that has essentially been a stale copy and paste version of itself for 10 years? am i understanding this correctly?
ETA:
as someone who works in IT. Most application development teams work in an Agile methodology (a set of lean principles and values). When contemplating adding a new component to their product, they will weigh each potential new component or feature using a simple equation in Agile called WSJF.
WSJF = cost of delay / job size.
Cost of Delay = Business Value + Time Criticality + Opportunity Enablement.
So in this case, adding WNBA players into an NBA video game:
Business Value (nothing) + Time Criticality (minimum) + Opportunity enablement (nothing) / Job Size (reasonable) = a decimal point with a lot of 0's preceding it. That WSJF score when relatively sized compared to other possible new components being added to their product, would be at the very very very bottom of their priority list.
....unless, being seen as Woke plays a huge factor into the WSJF formula for 2K. Which, if you are following me at this point, it clearly does.

SJW brownie points, are worth their weight in gold. The NBA is able to cloak themselves in SJW ooze to protect grabbing their ankles for the Chinese and all the sweet, sweet commie cash that comes with it.

When it comes to games it's always about expanding your market. I've gamed most of my life. I've also played sports for a good portion of my life. I would've enjoyed a WNBA portion but I don't know that I would've went out and bought a separate game for it (just being honest). Chances are NBA2K adds to it's consumer base with this without much effort.
And DLC's anymore in gaming are so detail intensive that it's likely the same amount of development as in-game, maybe even less if the structure is already there.

that's cool. one more thing we have in common.
you aren't wrong. i would just question how much market gain do they hope to see by adding this feature? likely very very minimal and we have data to back that up, because there is absolutely no translation of the NBA product to the WNBA product for fans on television, merchandise sales, or game tickets. it's a tiny little decimal point of a fraction.
as i said in my previous post. there are likely dozens of possible new additions, game modes, features, etc they could add to their product that would net them a larger market gain than this. this is nothing more than a PR move.
