The bcs continued for nearly a decade after auburn was left out.
They had binding contracts plus getting all the conference and teams to agree takes time. The seeds for the BCS started in 1986 when NBC and the Fiesta Bowl upped the payout to get 1 Miami and 2 Penn State, 2 independents at the time to play instead of Miami in the Orange Bowl and Penn State in the Sugar. After that discussion started to put 1 vs 2 in the same bowl but the Bowl Alliance didn’t start until 1992 and only after 94 Penn St and 96 ASU were denied shots at the title did the Big 10/Pac 10 and Rose Bowl agree and the BCS started in1998.

Will it be any better when Ohio State is up on Notre Dame by 30 in the 4th Quarter?
What does that have to do with anything

8 team playoff this year using 5 champs and 3 at large, with conference champs hosting.
Oregon vs. Clemson
UGA vs Notre Dame
Boise State vs Penn State
Arizona State vs Texas
Better than the first round that we had. Most matchups the same. Ohio State would be out.

People pizzed and moaned back then just like they are now.
People love to pizz and moan and as long as there’s a CFB post-season, there will be something “controversial” more years than not.
It’s part of what makes CFB fun in all honesty.

This … it’s going to 16 anyway, no message board griping will change that.

Post the bcs rankings compared to the playoffs
Everyone except Clemson would still be in it. Bama would’ve replaced them.

Oregon and UGA would have been playing in the BCS title game. No one else would have made it

Imagine wanting less football.
This board has lost its mind.

Then just don't watch it?
I like more football versus less.

People are mad because the powers that be are not paying attention to old-school fans who want old-school things.

I'm pretty old school and the old school way of picking champions completely sucked. The BCS sucked a little less, but still sucked. The 4 team playoff and now are vastly superior.
Posted on 1/4/25 at 5:16 pm to InkStainedWretch
Seems that way.
But what people are completely overlooking is that the playoff system isn't the only change that's been made.
With current NIL and portal rules, you can't go back to a single championship game. I'd even argue you can't go back to a 4 team playoff.
Over the next several years, NIL and the portal are going to have a much bigger impact than it does now once it takes root. There will be more parity which means a 12 (or even 16) team playoff wouldn't be as predictable.

Agreed.
This will eventually sort itself out. There may be a collectively agreed upon reining in of the portal, maybe players will agree to stay for at least two years but the schools will in turn have to ensure those two years barring bad misconduct or malfeasance by the players, no more “scholarships are for one year” or new coaches coming in and arbitrarily cleaning house.
But what was is dead forever, and while message boards are absolutely for people to vent and state their opinions, ain’t nobody who’s driving this car listening.
And people can say “fine, we’re tuning out,” but the powers that be are counting on that being just talk and that those who do tune out will be replaced by new, fresher eyes in the 18 to 49 age group which is all they care about anyway.

False. OU lost to K-State 35-7 and limped into the Sugar Bowl. It was a ridiculous outcome.

OG system:
Rose Bowl - Oregon (PAC) vs Ohio State (B1G)
Sugar - Georgia (SEC) vs Notre Dame
Cotton - Texas (SWC) vs Penn State
Orange - Iowa State (Big Eight) vs Tennessee
With the OTL results, Ohio State taking down Oregon turns the Sugar Bowl into the de facto championship game.

That BCS show was so damn fun when they’d predict the computers.
It really was the peak of cfb.
