Can we admit that there is an elite tier in CBB yet?

All year long, we have had the sheep following the media tell you that there are no dominant teams in college basketball this year. "The tourney is gonna be crazy!!!!" Is that true? Or are we just simpletons who need star players to think that a team is dominant? How is this year significantly different from other years?

Kansas, Duke, Gonzaga are by far the 3 most consistent teams of the past 20 years of CBB. Michigan State is in the ballpark, i suppose, but they are much weirder. Where do we find Kansas, Duke, and Gonzaga right now? At the top of the polls, per usual.

Imagine a Kansas, Duke, UNC, Kentucky team with Baylor's current resume. Baylor doesn't have a "star" player but their resume is frankly absurd. This is the definition of a dominant team.

San Diego State and Dayton are top tier mid majors. It is admittedly slightly odd to have 2 that are this good, but they are both legitimate threats.

Lastly, Maryland, the Big 10 leader who I just have trouble dropping to the non-contenders based on that resume.

The national champion will come from these 7 teams. That is no different than any other year.

Summary:

Tier 1:
Baylor
Kansas
Duke
Gonzaga

Tier 2:
San Diego State
Dayton
Maryland

This is normal. Why can't we accept that?

What does this have to do with this year’s tournament or evaluating tiers of teams this season?

it's just a retort to the "this year is so crazy" crowd. my underlying thesis is that this year is not crazy or significantly different than other years.

Hopefully Kansas doesn’t win so we don’t have to have another tournament winner vacate their championship.

Curious to see what seed Bill Self manages to lose to this year.

I agree overall. But I do think the list of teams that can knock off the teams you listed is longer than usual.

I mean... it usually is. It makes sense for the media to play up this talking point

fair enough, for sure.

the tier 3 that i didn't list would be enormous. and don't get me wrong, im not saying those 7 teams will comprise the final four. we may get a cinderella run (not unusual), we may get one or two of those 7 losing really early (not unusual), but it will be upsets early and chalk late like always.

and the idea that there aren't really good teams this year has been annoying to see portrayed. there are. im most annoyed by the lack of respect that baylor has received. i just can't imagine the hype that they would be getting if they were someone else.

I hear you.

I haven’t paid much attention at all but from what I’ve taken in, I honestly feel like there isn’t that much that separates a top ~7’s best game and the 18th ranked team’s best game.

I think most of that was based off the first few weeks of the season. Everyone lost early on, including four or five teams ranked first. Michigan ended up at 1 briefly, and I think OSU did as well. Duke lost to Stephen F Austin (which is currently 23-3). Kansas lost week 1 versus Duke. Gonzaga lost in Atlantis, etc,

Since the new year, the top 7-8 teams have been very stable.

right, so why is it still the perceived belief? why isn't baylor getting the credit that another team with their resume would receive? (well, we know why, they are baylor)

the point is that we do know which teams are elite, which aren't, and which teams have a legitimate shot at the national title. water has found its level.

I've watched almost every game this year and am still amazed that we are #1. Not a good outside shooting team most nights, average FT shooting team and not much size. The thing that is there every outing is defense. They have frustrated some really good teams with the aggressive man defense this year, Drew used to use more zone than man but this year it's been almost all man. The next 3 weeks will be rough starting tonight at OU then home vs. Kansas.

You’re right, there is a clear top tier but they are more vulnerable. Kansas and Duke are worse teams than Virginia and Duke last year. Gonzaga was better last year. It would not surprise me if a top 15 team wins it and there will be a team outside that range that makes a deep run too imo.

To wit, the elite top tier Blue Devils just lost by 22 to unranked NC State.
