Why is there such a big marketing push to call it that instead of the Super Bowl?

Because if you haven't bought the licensing you can't use the term super bowl. Money money money

It’s the other way around in a sense. Super Bowl is copyrighted so you can’t use the term for marketing purposes. So the alternative is “The Big Game”

They don’t want people calling it that.

They don’t let people use “Super Bowl” so they have to resort to calling it the big game. The NFL wants people to pay for the right to use the name Super Bowl. They don’t give a frick what other things people call it.

shite Show. Call it the shite show. That is all the nfl is these days. I wonder if they still only donate roughly 8% of their pink month proceeds to breast cancer. Bunch of hacks.

Everything now has naming rights. For example, if I was broadcasting a college baseball game, I might say “here in the Mercedes Benz broadcast booth…”

Or “here is another Borden Milk pitching change.”

NFL is all about maximizing the last dollar they can just like any other business.

True.

Not exactly. The NFL attempted to trademark "The Big Game" in yet another money grab, but Cal and Stanford put a stop to that.

The original XFL in 2001 first called their championship game The Big Game At The End.

Kinda sums up the power The NFL had and has, and how Vince decided to frame it.

Dude it's the first paragraph in the Wikipedia article for the Superbowl.

quote:

Because the NFL restricts use of its "Super Bowl" trademark, it is frequently referred to as the "big game" or other generic terms by non-sponsoring corporations. The day the game is played is often referred to as "Super Bowl Sunday" or simply "Super Sunday".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl#:~:text=because%20the%20nfl%20restricts%20use%20of%20its%20%22super%20bowl%22%20trademark%2C%20it%20is%20frequently%20referred%20to%20as%20the%20%22big%20game%22%20or%20other%20generic%20terms%20by%20non%2Dsponsoring%20corporations.%20the%20day%20the%20game%20is%20played%20is%20often%20referred%20to%20as%20%22super%20bowl%20sunday%22%20or%20simply%20%22super%20sunday%22.

OK I found that this section on the article actually goes into detail:

Super Bowl trademark

Tons of detail on their push to even try to trademark The Big Game unsuccessfully.

Here is a TIME article from 2017 that sums it up:

Here’s Why Companies Can’t Say ‘Super Bowl’ in Their Super Bowl Ads

The Big Game is the name of the Cal/Stanford game. Harvard/Yale is called The Game.

I am sure there are people in corporate management who believe that, but I don't think it's true legally.

Try coming out with Super Bowl Chips or Super Bowl Avocado and see how fast they come after you with a TRO.
