LEXINGTON, Ky. — One day after Kentucky's season ended in an Elite Eight loss to Auburn, the school has agreed to terms with head coach John Calipari on a "long-term contract."

A UK spokesman confirmed the extension he said would allow Calipari to "finish his career at Kentucky," but did not disclose details of the deal. Earlier in the day, Seth Davis of the Athletic reported amid interest from UCLA Kentucky had offered Calipari "what is essentially a lifetime contract" to remain as its head coach.

Calipari is expected to address the new contract during his radio show at 6 p.m.

Great move by UK. We all know what happens when Cal leaves a school

How dare he go to a place where actual coaching is required

He's such a snake. Everyone and their mother knew he had his agent call UCLA and tell them they were interested only to freak Kentucky out.

And Kentucky fell for it. Giving away a Charlie Weis contract that will purportedly pay Cal forever when he's old (he's already old) and retired.

They didn't resign a coach, they gave him a retirement package. He's not going to coach 10-20 more years. Get real.

Duke has been to the final four twice in the last 15 years.

Don’t hate the player.

Cal at UK (or Memphis or UMass for that matter) >>>> Weis at ND

UCLA offered Cal 6 years $48 million. He declined. Said this deal with UK has been in the works for months.

I hope they have an ethics and morality clause in the contract.

I’m surprised they aren’t ready to run him out of town by now

This is how the real world works. Want a raise at your current job? Apply elsewhere, tell your employer somebody is willing to hire you with an increase in salary. Employer decides to pay you more/promotion or leave.

Lmao at comparing Cal to Weiss.

Seriously, go look at the stats of the last 10 years of the NCAA Tournament and look who has the most trips, wins, sweet 16, Elite 8, and Final Fours. Then get back to me.

In the past 10 years, there have been 17 different teams in the NCAA Final 4. That just shows you how random the tournament is.

What about Duke?

Did Coach K fail his players this year? That roster was supposed to be unstoppable.

Seems like they were bidding against themselves. UCLA doesn’t have that kind of money. Still always good to lock up a coach like that. Better than hiring guys destined to be fired in 4 years like Arkansas inevitably will.

He is not getting a pay raise. He always said he was retiring in 10 years. The new contract is more for him after retirement as an ambassador for the athletic program. It was smart to lock him up, because Kentucky is a monster...not any coach can handle it.

UCLA offered Cal 6 years/48 million or 8 million/year. Cal made 9.2 million in salary last year.

So Kentucky got antsy that their coach was going to leave for less money? That's the most panicky I've ever heard of.

I'm glad.

It really helps recruiting.

He's the man. And will be.

IMO I think they may have been more antsy about the potential for the Lakers than UCLA.

That said, they’ve talked about giving him an ambassador role in the past if he stayed here. Joe B. Hall has done similar. I’m sure there’s a clause in there that relieves the University of any financial responsibility if any NCAA violations were to come up. I don’t have any issue keeping him until he decides to retire. He’s been a fantastic coach.
