re: Braves trade Yunel Escobar to Jays

I was surprised to see this trade when I checked ESPN today and even more surprised when I saw how many Braves fans like this trade. AGon is awful. He is not a good hitter. He is not a power hitter. Yes, he has hit 17 HRs this year, but he has hit over 15 HRs three times in a 10 year career.
He used to be a great defender, now he is basically average (or was last year, he might be a bit better now that he is a couple of years removed from surgery). He is fantastic at anything hit to him, but his range is not that good. The one plus I'd give him is that he is a pretty good clubhouse guy. But that it isn't worth trading a player who is better, younger, and cheaper. This hurts the Braves team this year and hurts them even more in the future.
And for those saying he may benefit from moving from the AL East (with HR friendly parks in BOS, NYY, BAL, and TOR) to the NL, he has played in the NL nearly his entire career. He has a sub-.700 OPS and sub-.300 OBP.
My prediction for his second half (if he plays 60-65 games or so):
.240/.280/.370, 5HRs, 20RBIs
Braves fans are going to hate this guy.

To be fair he's just replacing somebody most of us hate.
And its not all the clubhouse stuff. I would be in favor of keeping him regardless of whether or not the rest of the team hated him if he was a solid professional who didn't loaf consistently and make boneheaded plays. Anybody here trust Yunel to not do something incredibly stupid in the 7th game of the World Series? Or to not sulk his way through the playoffs?

I like this trade. shite, we've been winning while yunel has done not shite, so the worst thing that can happen is gonzalez produces the same stats as yunel and we are in the same position that we were already in, but I think he will be an upgrade. Also, we don't need yunel's attitude.

Collins has 234 Ks in 194 minor league innings
15.4 K per 9IP this year

well its a strange list really considering it leaves off Hughes and Pettite.
Just something I noticed looking him up, Gonzalez has kind of an odd stat line for a right hander
against lefties: .213/.234/.714 with 4 HR's and 8 RBI's in 75 AB's
against righties: .273/.314/.816 with 13 HR's and 42 RBI's in 253 AB's
If we only had a left handed shortstop Bobby would probably start platooning him.

I'm not Braves fan so I don't know much about Escobar beyond the numbers. If he is as bad as some are saying, I suppose something had to be done with him. I just don't see Gonzales being a big help especially at the plate. He will be a good guy in the clubhouse but if I was a Braves fan, I'd hope the plan would be to give Gonzales about half of the starts and hit him 7th.

I would definitely want him around 7th, he's too poor of an OBP guy to hit farther up. Nobody's expecting him to hit for a high average, if he can play solid defense, at least somewhat keep this power up, i.e. 10 HR's give or take, and not be an idiot then he did his job.

I saw that earlier today as well. I think I looked backed to 08 or 07 to see if it was a trend or a half year fluke. Those few years I looked at agreed that he hits righties better than lefties.

I agree with all of this. I just have a hard time supporting someone with an OBP the same as Nate Mclouth this year. Let's just hope he produces because we will need him. I just have a feeling everyone on this site will end up hating him more than Yunel. And yes, believe it or not, that is possible

Dude, people seem to go from hating a guy to liking a guy or vice versa quicker than my dog goes through a raw hide.
I was waiting for Glaus to get snipered by some one on this board earlier in the season!

Yeah that stat line against righties is encouraging, and obviously its good that he's better against righties than lefties.
I was thinking for a second they could give Omar some games against lefties (and they still could although I don't in any way see Bobby doing a platoon) but hell Omar is the same way but even more pronounced. I knew he was hitting righties well but I didn't realize he was doing this against them: .362/.384/.831 in 132 AB's
against lefties he's .262/.303/.614 in 61 AB's.

while yunel is playing like a terd sandwich, they undersold like a mother fricker. watch him come out of his slump and blow up in the second half
i think they traded him bc his attitude had to have finally worn on the rest of the organization
I haven't read through the whole thread to see if you changed your tune any...
But the SS prospect they got is very legit. Definite upside to be better than Yunel. And 7 years younger...

Honestly I'm kind of happy to see Yunel leave. He's been only OK lately.

And not to mention the future. If we had a guy in the minors waiting in the wings at short, then I'd be okay with this. Problem is, we don't
We got him in the deal.
Kid is 20. Swiped 51 last year.
Already stole 24 this year.
Ricciardi says he's a definite everyday player at either SS or 2B. Got a set of wheels. Good contact hitter and plays with a shite ton of energy.

LOL, I know his stats aren't good for his career. I was just talking about this year.

not really, mclouth put up a 30-30 year, that is not just playing well for a bit
