Old guy here. The transfer portal and players opting out has destroyed the bowl games. Use to be my favorite time of the year, now it means nothing. What a shame

Bowl games have been meaningless long before the transfer portal.

Only three bowl games mean anything.

They didn't really meant anything before either, you just cared for some reason. There are still good games on. I'm not sure why people act like they are just pulling random guys off the street to play these games. The guys that aren't playing won't be playing next year, the guys that are playing will.

Please explain why the Oregon UNC game last night meant anything less than any other Holiday Bowl 5-10 years ago.

Who watches The NIT,if you are a Football School and there's no chance of winning a National Championship, do you want to watch a meaningless bowl

They have never meant anything other than a few bragging rights and the awesome extra month of practice.

Wrong. Bowl games match teams otherwise would never play each other. It's for the players who earned the right to become bowl eligible. A reward for the years hard work. More practice time for the younger players. Plus with the new NCAA rule allowing freshman not to lose their red shirt for playing in the bowls helps balance the opt out or NFL draft entries. This helps a lot. So the bowls are still important. Especially when we go to a 12 team playoff in 2024.

40 years ago when there were only 15 bowls - they all meant something. And the true "New Years Day bowls" (Cotton, Orange, Rose, Sugar) were incredibly meaningful.

But now there are 41 bowls. 82 out of 131 teams play in a bowl game.

So most of them are garbage, but there are still 10-15 that are meaningful.

But I'm with you, I haven't watched a second of the bowls thus far. I'll watch some of the better bowls from here on out, but with all the opting out, I don't even know who/what I'm watching.

I haven’t watched any and I’m not pausing my vacation to watch ours either. If the team doesn’t care about them why should we.

Finally getting past all the 6-6 teams that "earned" their bowl bid and seeing some better teams compete.

Well, you think Bowl Games are meaningless?

Look at the embarrassment Ole Miss is dealing with today after a pathetic showing by Kiffin and his team in the Texas Bowl.

If they didn’t mean anything they wouldn’t make a difference if a team has a winning season or not.

If they didn’t mean anything the TV Networks wouldn’t pay to broadcast each and every one of them. If you want to watch reruns of “Murder She Wrote” or “The Love Boat” then do it.

In reality only 1 or 2 Bowl Games ever determined the National Champion. When the CFP expands to 12 teams every one of those games will have an input toward the NC. It will not be long before the CFP expands again to 16 teams because the CFP Games will generate much more money than non-playoff Bowl Games. This is just common sense and some Bowl Games will die.

That all being said, right now Bowl Games still do mean something and are far from meaningless.

that’s why I like them.

Get next year’s starters some reps.

And yes. I will watch even if lsu has 39 players in a bowl game.

I did it last year until the game ended.

I was very happy for jontre to pass for touchdowns.

So true. Just like no game in the regular season means anything after a team loses two games. Just like no game really means anything for 99% of the teams that have no realistic chance of winning a conference or national championship. Unless of course you enjoy watching college football. In which case every game is meaningful if your coaching staff gets the players ready to play at a high level.

So don't focking watch them!

You pitiful little Nancies that show up here everyday complaining about the bowl games are ridiculous.

They do mean something to the programs (extra practice, extra money) and to the players (for some; one final game) and for some fans (holiday trip).

But if they are meaningless to you, so do something else like, playing with your gerbil or cleaning the lint from your dryer filter.

-I'll watch because of kids like Josh Williams
-I'll watch to see the super Frosh continue to grow
-I'll watch to see guys like Quincy Wiggins get some action
-I'll watch because LSU will be on the field for the last time this season
-I'll watch because I love LSU football, warts and all! I can't imagine not watching a bowl game(or any game) with them in it.

Bowl games mean enough to get online to start a thread bitching about how they are meaningless and to say you miss the good ole days. Just don’t watch. Pretty simple.
