Sure. I’d love to see NFL players play in a suit and tie.

Pretty sure Mike Tyson could have beat their asses at the same time.

Or did you mean at Chess?

How about a randomly selected individual sport that does not include each athletes major sport, who would win that? If you had to place a bet prior to that selection, would you pick the chess player or whomever the other world class athlete would be?

Basically, I am curious if you have thought this through or is this just a poorly disguised troll?

Morphy was so far ahead of his peers that he didn't have peers.

Chess is a game. All sports are games, but not all games are sports.

And these 2 men couldn’t beat any elite athlete in any other sport.

I'm not disagreeing but it is kind of funny how when he did lose he'd often lose to shitty openings. Barnes beat him as black with 1.e4 f6 (who starts a game opening up your king like that?) and Anderssen went 1-1-1 against him with 1. a3 as the white pieces. You'd think someone of Morphy's caliber would punish such openings with ease. But I guess everyone has their bad days, just like Fischer and that infamous blunder against Spassky where he took the h pawn, which is something usually only beginners fall for.

World Series of Poker champions aren’t athletes either.

At Chess? I mean obviously.

I will say this, as a chess fan my heart really broke when AI became unbeatable. I think chess is the single greatest game man has ever created. It did lose some of its magic for me though when an algorithm became invisible against imagination.

Fischer Random (Chess960) will hopefully catch on more as time goes by. Chess prep is boring and unimaginative these days, just memorizing engine lines more and more. At least with Fischer Chess, sure you're still not going to be able to beat an engine 1v1 but at least you can't use the engine to prep since you don't know how your pieces will start out until the game starts, so imagination and creativity and personal intuition become more paramount to high level chess instead of memorizing and regurgitating what the computer tells you. But it still keeps the original spirit of chess as the board remains the same and the number and type of pieces remains the same, unlike some variants that use crazy big boards or adding new pieces.

Also there are other chess variants that are pretty cool. Crazyhouse is probably my favorite, it borrows the drop rule from Shogi. Basically any pieces or pawns you capture, instead of being removed from the board for the rest of the game, you can use a turn to put a captured piece back on the board on your side instead of making a move (with limitations). So unlike standard chess where the games "simplify" as you get deeper in the game, Crazyhouse gets more complex as the game goes on like Shogi.

It’s not a physical competition. No part of chess relies on any sort of athleticism. It’s an amazing and beautiful game but it’s not a sport.

You can call them competitors but you can’t call them athletes.

The thing is, he was always pretty loony even before he beat Spassky. His fans and the country just overlooked that because they wanted an American to beat the Soviets so bad (it was the height of the Cold War). I don't think a chess match has ever been given as much attention as Fischer/Spassky in the game's history. Watch this video of Fischer after winning the Candidates, you will never see a crowd react this way to a chess player again:

Youtube link, crowd reacts to Fischer beating Petrosian to win Candidates

I mean Fischer pretty much retired twice and dropped out of the world championship circuits in the 60s long before the match with Spassky, and an exception was made to even allow him in the Interzonal tournament since he hadn't played in the qualifying tournaments beforehand when he went to the World Championship.

He didn't just suddenly get crazy after becoming champion, he just always was. But he was forgiven for it due to his youth and American disdain for the Soviets, but once he refused to defend his title against Karpov, then it was free game to focus on Fischer's mental state

A multi-hour game takes a physical toll. Fischer did workouts to prepare.

Tell the most in-shape athlete from any sport that he has to be 100% mentally focused for hours on end and see how he does. Closest would be an F1 driver and that is only 2 hours.

No athlete in any other sport could beat these 2 men

Chess is indeed very physically taxing. Magnus works out every day as well.

Fischer better than Morphy doe.

Also, Fischer dodged Karpov just like Staunton dodged Morphy

Fischer would have worked over Karpov in 75 when they were slated to play.

He was unraveling...he didn't "dodge karpov".
