again, much like the "free market", capitalism isn't an idea that should be present in LITERALLY every facet of your entire life. Amateur athletics isn't for capitalism. It's for amateur athletes to go play sports in exchange for a free education and a truck load of other things they were already compensated for. It was a good system that worked for over 100 years until people like you (apparently) decided that was too much of a good thing so we gotta put a stop to it.
Go frick yourself commie

Replacing the NCAA isn't a bad idea.
The Federal government running the new organization is the worst idea in the history of bad ideas.

Another dumb arse bill.
Why does it make sense for them that football and basketball generates so much but ehat they generate should be equally distributed to other sports?
That's the moronic crap that got us in this situation. That and idiots saying "they're already get a free scholarship!!1!". Ignoring the fact they generate hundreds of millions over their stay.

None of that is any business of the federal government of the US.
Posted on 4/10/25 at 8:18 am to WG_Dawg
This is a business now, not strictly amateur athletics, and it’s subject to the same laws as any other business, which is why the courts have jurisdiction.

I remind you that the main Supreme Court ruling on this stuff was 9-0, conservatives and liberals completely united, and Brett Kavanaugh signaled in his decision that he was ready to go even farther toward the athletes' side. It's silly to paint this as a liberal-conservative deal.

I know that it IS, i'm saying that it SHOULDN'T be.
Why stop in college? Why not incorporate NIL and transfers to the HS ranks? Middle school? 8U?

Why shouldn't it be? Because fans don't want it to be? That's the biggest reason everyone is so butt hurt by the idea of players getting a cut of the pie, because the fans think their interests should be paramount in this stuff and the players are just transitory performers for their entertainment.
And while you can't have it without the fans, I absolutely concede that, the reality is that the people who actually put their asses on the line for the fans' entertainment have a stake in the deal now, if that bothers the fans they can choose not to watch, and the powers that be are betting that new ones will replace the old ones who leave. The dirty little secret is that if you're over 45, the powers that be really don't care if you watch anyway.
Everyone was beating their chests for years about the big money TV deals, etc., like they were matching sizes in the stalls, without thinking that this was the inevitable outcome.

for the same reason i've said a thousand times...it's amateur student athletics. It's not the pros.

because they're students. They aren't professionals yet.

no..the biggest reason is because look around you. The game is ruined and it barely resemebles the version of the sport that grew to the popularity it did.

I mean....they are. I watch UGA football becuase i lvoe UGA, my decision to tune in or not isn't based on what players we have.

and as has been mentioend numersou times they wre already getting compensated well into the 6 figures.
-free tuition
-free housing
-free books
-free tutors/academic assistance
-free food
-free clothes
-free medical care
-a monetary stipend
All of that in exchange for playing the sport, which all parties signed on the dotted line and agreed to. It worked great. Then greed and people who have no stake at all (hurr durr I want muh NCAA video game to have real players in it!) took over.

imagine thinking the PTB willingly and knowingly running off fans is a good idea

Honestly I respect the consistency of your position, I really do. I just think you’re taking on the Matterhorn here because the ship has sailed. The courts, liberals and conservatives, are in lockstep on the players’ side, and as I pointed out that noted Supreme Court Trotskyite Brett Kavanaugh signaled his willingness to go way farther toward the players’ side.
The money is not going away and people will eventually get used to that. What must be reined in, and given what the courts have ruled it will have to be done through negotiations, nothing is going to be imposed by the NCAA, conferences or some strongman commissioner, is the portal. Free agency will destroy the sport sooner than the players getting paid.
And as far as running people off, if you aren’t 18 to 45 no sports league or entertainment or communications entity wants you as a customer, They’re not going to outright run you off if you’re not in that group, but they’re not going to do anything to keep you. I managed to make it to 65 in the newspaper business and I actually heard the words in corporate staff meetings, “We’re not interested in having older people in our customer base because if you curry to them you will die with them.”
I had to have an out of body experience to listen to that s**t without firing myself, but I finally got out on my own terms.

Oh I know it has and it's not coming back. I'm not trying to say "well if we do X,Y,Z we can make things how they were.." I know those days are gone.

which si something that has always perplexed me. Why on earth the federal courts are involved with amateur athletics.

I can understand that in some ways in the business world but it seems an odd fit for NCAAF. The "old" pepole are the ones buying tickets and traveling to games, not to meniton the ones renewing season tickets every year, supporting the atheltic association, etc. Those are folks you need.

it's both combined but I agree the free unfettered transfers is probabaly a bigger deal now. Blows my mind how the hell the people in charge ever thought that was a good idea and passed that into existence.

sure....but putting it in the hands of the government would be like firing jerry sandusky as your kid's babysitter and hiring john wayne gacy to replace him

Like I said, when the ginormous money came into the sport, this was the inevitable outcome. Because while the value of the “package” players got was not insignificant, I’m not going to debate you there by any means, at least with the most major schools and conferences it’s a drop in the ocean compared to what the other hawgs feeding at the trough are getting with the jillions that have been pumped into the sport.
The really dire threat is to the smaller schools and conferences who can’t play in this pool.
I also sincerely admire your commitment to the concept of amateur sports, but that ship sailed long ago too. Olympic athletes have been getting paid for 40-plus years.

Public universities are government run operations. I admit the bill is stupid, but too many college football fans think their team is a private corporation or a professional football franchise.
