Spinning off on the NFL topic, let's post similar moments for CFB.

My pick is Kansas State's improbable loss in the 1998 Big 12 Championship Game. I've seen mizzoubuckeyeiowa talk about how much of a letdown for most of the country this was, kinda like 59-year-old Tom Watson barely losing the 2009 British Open.

For context, Kansas State was once arguably the worst program in college football. When Bill Snyder took over after the 1988 season, the program had only been to one bowl game in its entire history (a loss in the 1982 Independence Bowl) and had a winning percentage of .300. There were talks of disbanding the program completely. Over the next decade, Snyder did the impossible and used the Kansas JUCO pipeline to turn Kansas State into a reputable program.

The apex was in 1998 where Kansas State was arguably the best team in the country. Led by Heisman runner-up Michael Bishop, the Wildcats went 11-0 in the regular season, needing only a win over #10 Texas A&M in the Big 12 Championship Game to secure a spot in the inaugural BCS National Championship Game. The Wildcats were favored by 17 and for most of the game they lived up to their reputation, building a 27-12 lead going into the fourth quarter. It looked like the greatest program turnaround in college football history would be reaching an epic ending for the ages.

However, the impossible happened. The Aggies scored a touchdown and were stopped on their next drive, but while attempting to run out the clock with a 27-19 lead, Kansas State's Michael Bishop fumbled after securing the game-clinching first down but before he could get down. The Aggies tied it up and the Wildcats, in their bid to avoid overtime, launched a Hail Mary that was completed...at the 1. Had that been a touchdown, Bishop may very well have won the Heisman.

The game went to double overtime where Kansas State led 36-33 and had the Aggies backed up at the 32-yard line. Stewart then threw one of the most heartbreaking touchdowns in CFB history to Sirr Parker, and the greatest program turnaround in CFB history was stopped just short of its epic conclusion.

To add insult to injury, the Wildcats, who were ranked #3 in the final BCS standings, weren't even awarded a BCS bid, most infamously being passed over for the Orange Bowl by the #8-ranked Florida Gators. They weren't selected for the Cotton Bowl either, as they picked the 8-3 Texas Longhorns (#20 AP/#19 Coaches') instead. The Wildcats dropped all the way down to the Alamo Bowl to play the Purdue Boilermakers. A dejected Kansas State team lost 37-34.

2007 WVU

Choked against their rival at home who was awful. Would have played the Buckeyes and ran circles around them in the national championship. Had to watch LSU smack the buckeyes around instead.

LSU's home loss to Arkansas to end the season should have ruined their season.

But knowing that LSU has three other national titles in it's history, it's not likely as tragic as West Virginia's.

I think you guys nailed the top 3.

South Carolina fans will include their loss to Navy in ‘84.

#2 West Virginia choking to a 4-7 Pitt team with a BCS championship spot on the line. They had a 7-3 halftime lead as well.

I guess I’m old, because I remember that game like it was yesterday. That could be the greatest win in Aggie history.

Growing up in the 90s, that was basically the biggest choke job out of any team back then, aside from UF blowing the 31-3 4th Quarter lead against FSU at Doak.

I really wonder how the landscape of college football changes if they had won that game and played in the national title game. Especially if they had won the natty.

Also in 2007, but not quite as significant... South Florida made it all the way up to #2 in the BCS including wins over Auburn and the aforementioned 2007 West Virginia team... then they choked three straight weeks against unranked Rutgers, UConn, and Cincy to fall out of the rankings entirely.

In terms of history... with the way the 2007 season went, that would have been the best chance for a non-power 5 team to break into championship picture.

All time Tennessee team in terms of talent, but they got insanely lucky that year...

UF turning it over like crazy and missing FGs.
Arkansas self-destructing
Miss State in the SECCG in a West that was just as weak as the East was back in 2013/2014
FSU in the Natty after Weinke got hurt, and after Kansas State blew a 15 point lead.

That team literally had everything go right and then some.

When you look at programs without a natty in the modern era, the ones who came closest but choked would be Okie State in 11, WVU in 07, Kansas State in 98, and South Carolina in 84.

Kansas and Mizzou were close in 07 as well, but I wouldn’t say their losses were chokes.

I’ll throw out another for 2011: Boise State. They missed a 39-yarder at the buzzer to beat TCU. I believe if Boise goes undefeated, they get the push to play LSU in New Orleans.

Bama would have still gotten their mulligan over Boise St.

Not sure about that one, but I think if WVU makes the national title game in 2007, Rich Rod is at West Virginia a while longer, Les goes to Michigan and college football history is much different.

2010 Iron Bowl

Alabama was winning 21-0 after first quarter

Lost 28-27

If they win, Auburn may not make the championship game.
