Earnhardt or Petty?
I was watching the Earnhardt documentary on Prime and Darell Waltrip said that many people called Dale Earnhardt the best driver ever even though he wasn’t.
So if he wasn’t who was?

The rednecks hated on Jimmie because he was a Cali boy. Simple truth to it all.

David Pearson
Cale Yarborough
Jeff Gordon
Jimmie Johnson was very good, but I think he also benefited from a period in which engineering was critical to running well and he had the best engineers and the best crew chief in Chad Knaus.

David Pearson put up some incredible numbers. Hell, he finished 3rd in the points one year when he ran only 19 of the 30 races.

If that was the case, why was he beating out Gordon, who’s on your list and was an owner of Johnson’s car?

David Pearson.
Him and Earnhardt were 1A and 1B.
Pearson ran only 3 full seasons but in all 3 he won the title. He won 105 races. If he'd have had the financial banking with the Wood Brothers that the Petty's had, he very possibly could have won 8-10 titles and close to 300 races. Dude was a bad motherfricker who doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves.

Benefitted the most from the new playoff system than anyone else. Directly won 4 titles due to it.

I don’t believe Gordon had a crew chief at that time that he meshed with like Johnson and Knaus did. Knaus knew how to give Jimmie the car he needed.

Gordon has more wins and Top 10 finishes.
He ran more races, but Johnson would have needed a Top 10 in almost all of them and to win 1 out of 10 to catch.
NASCAR fricked up with the playoffs bullshite.

(From AI)
Richard Petty is famously quoted as saying David Pearson was the greatest driver he ever saw. Petty has stated: "From a pure driving ability and being relaxed and just doing it without getting emotional about it, he was the best. There was no doubt about it,". Pearson himself would acknowledge Petty's opinion, saying he would "never argue with anything his friend said,".
