Don't they not at least go into next year or was that fake news?
pretty sure they maintain rights to the player, at least as far as the NFL is concerned, until the following draft.

Damn. Didn't realize that

Helluva source.

Let us know when you win literally anything.
Rent free better describes how every Aggie has a little brother complex with any school that pays attention to them.
We never wanted to be your big brother, go back to bothering the longhorns

Bo Jackson was drafted by the Bucs 1st overall back in 1986, and was drafted again by the Raiders 1987. Basically how it works with NBA, NFL, and MLB.

I wonder how much the Texans fully guaranteed contract they gave their rookie WR is going to effect this stuff going forward

Yeah that opened up a can of worms, almost none of the second rounders are signed because of it.

Losing a first round pick would be a big blow to an NFL franchise. I wonder if litigation could go the other way as well.

Maybe they should make a portion of it guaranteed as standard contract language. These guys do have a short shelf life

I lose interest in college football more every year.

For most teams? Yes. For the cheap Bengals who probably can't afford to guarantee pay a first round pick?...
I've never seen an NFL organization run so poorly. They went all in for Burrow Chase and Higgins and said "oh well, we'll figure everything else out later".

That’s how it works with a hard salary cap

The problem is not the cap. It's owner cash flow. The bengals owner is relatively poor and the team is one of the least valuable in the NFL. Burrow, Chase, and Higgins alone are guaranteed $372 million in the next 5 years. NFL teams have to escrow fully guaranteed money from these contracts the day they're signed.

It works hand in hand. If you’re low on cap space, you can guarantee more, restructure, add void years, etc.
But you also can’t have more than a 1/3 of your cap tied up in 3 players, which they currently do for 2025.
Re-signing Higgins was dumb.

This seems like a situation the NFL, NFLPA, and college football would all want to avoid being litigated.
That's maybe true. What's the reason the NFLPA would care? The NFL obviously cares. The NCAA on the other hand probably doesn't want it because they like the relationship they have with the NFL. They have been the defacto minor leagues and have made a ton of money. But, this isn't a bad thing for the NCAA product.
Regardless, how could the NFL and NFLPA have an argument in this conversation? How could they make the case that they have any control over a person not in the union and not a player in the NFL.
If the NCAA were to fight it, I don't know how they'd win when they have lost every other case.

Well he’s probably not academically eligible unless he was in school while training for the combine and draft.

They require you declare for the draft and as such forfeit your amateur status
