The 22-year-old Aussie said on Saturday (AEST) he has never previously been able to work on his unreliable shooting action — a bonkers revelation considering his shooting weakness was pointed out by scouts during his college basketball season with Louisiana State University.

“Honestly, I’ve never needed to shoot,” Simmons said after his pre-season press conference at the Sixers’ media day.

“I’ve never had somebody teach me how to shoot. It’s something I’m new at so I have all these people saying I can’t do this, well, obviously I can’t because it’s something I’m new at.

“So really this is the first time I’ve had time to practice it and work on my shots.”

He then admitted to ESPN in another interview that his shot is “nowhere near close” to where he wants it to be.

“Nowhere near close. This s the second year I’ve been playing. Really it’s the first time I’ve worked on my jumper and had the whole summer to work on it,” he said.

“It takes time. It’s not like I’m just going to come out here and start draining threes.

LSU fans continue to be insecure little cry babies. By simply stating that no one ever sat him down to focus on his shooting form LSU fans get all butthurt and pretend Simmons is lashing out at the university. Show me on the doll where Simmons touched you

I think that's BS. It's like Jon Lester throwing to bases in baseball, it's all up in his head, he dreads taking an outside shot, he doesn't want to. Until he overcomes that technique won't matter.

Now I will say Johnny Jones could never shoot a lick himself so I would not expect he could help. But if he could I doubt it woulda made a difference.

What an idiot. He grew up with YouTube. At no point in his journey to the NBA he thought “maybe I should work on the most fundamental aspect of the profession I’m trying to make a living at.”

You know I always was pissed at Simmons for having a foot out of the door at LSU but I’m starting to back off some. I’m sure jj played into that a lot.

Most basketball players teach themselves how to shoot. As you develop in the game you learn the ins and outs of the mechanics and techniques. It all starts with a kid grabbing a ball and mimicking what he sees the guys do on tv. Chip Engelland and Mark Price ain’t finna show up to a driveway or boys and girls club near you.

JJ had the best collection of talent he was gonna ever get, and missed the NCAA Tournament with that talent, and you still make an argument like this?

As crazy as this sounds, it's probably true for most basketball players. I played in college, and I've never had anyone teach me how to shoot either.

I mean growing up, I've gotten some pointers here and there. But I got good at it by hours and hours of shooting by myself and trial and error.

Coaches teach us how to play basketball as a team. They don't work with you so much individually. We'd do different drills related to ball-handling, defensive footwork, rebounding, moves before dribbling such as jab steps, pump fakes, etc... but surprisingly shooting drills weren't done that much.

Free throw shooting at the end of practice was about the extent of individual shooting during practice.

If you wanted to learn how to shoot, that's something that you'd have to do on your own with a personal shooting coach.

Now, the gym door was always open for you to go in and get some shots up. It was expected. But I never really worked personally with a shooting coach.

Edit:... now that I'm looking back and thinking about it, we did do some shooting drills. Probably more than I originally thought.

And Ben Simmons' dad was a professional basketball player. He should have learned to shoot from him.

That's it ben, it's someone else's fault you're a bad shooter, not your own for never developing your own shot.

He’s been pretty consistent in his comments. I wish he’d focus them more toward Jones, personally. We’ve got Wade now, so whatever.

Makes sense. Most people learn things out of necessity. Took Lebron years to develop a serviceable jump shot. Doesn't help that Ben is shooting with the wrong hand.

I don’t believe him. He’s acting like he was neglected. No one would have helped BEN SIMMONS with his jumper if he’d asked?

There is no excuse for being 22 and at that level in basketball and not knowing how to shoot the ball. This is on Simmons.

Someone helping you with your jumper and having a dedicated shooting coach aren't the same thing. It's not really a crazy sentiment by Simmons, the only surprising thing is that his dad didn't get him a personal shooting trainer in HS when it became apparent he'd be the #1 pick in the draft.
