The 2023 running of the Barley Marathons just wrapped up. The Barkley is one of the toughest ultramarathons out there, with approximately 1% of runners finishing. Just 15 people finished in the 40 year history of the race. It is a 100+ mile race consisting of five alternating loops with 60,000 feet of elevation change that needs to be completed in 60 hours.

2023 saw great trail and weather conditions which led to a record three finishers. First was Frenchman Aurelien Sanchez, followed by hometown boy and second-time finisher John Kelly, and lastly Karel Sabbe, the Belgian dentist who had twice before failed on his final loop.

Anyone else been following?

Is this the one in Tennessee? If so the video I watched on some steaming service was next level. If it’s the one I’m thinking it should be right up the alley of David Goggins.

It's held only a few miles north of me. One year I'm going to have to go just hang out... I had no intention of ever running that much.

It would be fun to at least go for the hour prep and the start.... If anyone knew when the start was going to be

I'm still surprised no woman has gotten to a fifth loop. Usually in these multiday events, the gaps gets much smaller. Courtney Dauwalter has won a number of big 200+ mile races overall. I'd love to see her give it a go again during a better weather year.

i follow it every year since the documentary came out. 3 finishers and first finishers since 2017! Laz is a total psychopath and its hilarious. Those people running it might be just as bananas. He will likely make it more difficult next year with 3 people finishing and so many people making it to loops 4 and 5

Think you could get a loop in?

Yeah, we had temps down into the 20s several nights this week. That's rough and it's probably a few degrees colder up there.

in terms of ultra running in the south this time of year, can't ask for better weather.

courtney could def do it though.

the field was stacked this year. early on i was hoping for 5+ finishers.

Barkley Fall Classic is a 50k with parts of the course. in typical laz fashion, the course is not reveled until the night before and no gps allowed. but there are at least some course markings.

Is this the one where the race director lights up a cigarette to signal the start

That one was kind of silly to me. Is it really that difficult, or is it more like those “shock factor” haunted houses? Having to weed through sticker bushes, no gps, no course map, no real defined trail…I just don’t see the point. These are trail runners and ultra marathon runners, not green berets.

3 finishers is good.

How many hours do they have per lap? I could do a lap in 8 hours but think it's less than that.

What was the entry fee this year? A pair of boxers? Ol boy usually goes by what he needs, wardrobe wise.

This would be something i would love to try. An aunt of mine told me about this race last year at a family reunion and evidently she has completed it. Id have to change the way i train, but certainly think it is achievable. The wait list to get in is substantial. I looked it up last year when i was running a good bit

it's a 60 hour time limit overall, not sure on cutoffs. 8 hours and change is around what the leaders run on the first loop. if you are a seasoned ultra runner with extensive mountain experience, you might be able to do this (assuming you have no intention of running any additional loops).

I must be dumber than you because I thought Charles Barkley was planning to run a couple of marathons this year.

I came here thinking I’m glad Chuck has decided to get in better shape, but his poor knees are going to get destroyed as his massive frame pounds the pavement for several hours a week while training.

must finish the 3rd loop in under 36 hours to continue and then 12 hours per loop after that i believe.
Cant imagine having to not only just be awake for that long but be able to stay focused and coherent enough to traverse and navigate your way through dark forest and mountains
